AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2024 Spoilers |
Singles Match for the AEW World Championship: Swerve Strickland (c) vs. Will Ospreay
This totally doesn't make any sense to me. Why go in this direction, rather than have two separate matches where both of their titles are on the line? Also, this is a pay-per-view built around the idea of cross-promotional stuff, but we have these two guys who are just regulars on the AEW roster against each other? Huh? This makes more sense for WrestleDream or something. Very weird. I don't know what they're thinking.
PREDICTION: Swerve Strickland retains.
Ladder Match for the Vacant AEW TNT Championship: Dante Martin vs. Jack Perry vs. Konosuke Takeshita vs. Lio Rush vs. Mark Briscoe vs. El Phantasmo
It sucks that Adam Copeland is injured, but at least the idea of a ladder match to crown the new champion is super fun and interesting.
I would definitely rule out Dante Martin and Lio Rush for not being at a high enough level, as well as Mark Briscoe, since he's already holding the ROH title. This is pretty much boiling down to Jack Perry as the most obvious pick and Konosuke Takeshita as the next viable option. I'm fully confident Perry is winning this.
PREDICTION: Jack Perry wins.
Singles Match for the AEW Women's World Championship: "Timeless" Toni Storm (c) vs. Mina Shirakawa
This is great! I've been complaining about Toni Storm's feuds for what feels like 2 years straight. Finally, we have someone new to the mix AND the story isn't just "I want to fight you for your title" and nothing more.
Mina Shirakawa isn't going to win the title. That's fairly certain. But I'm not familiar with her work, so I'm interested to see what she does and how this match goes down. On top of that, we know this will (or at least, should) push the storyline of Mariah May defecting from Toni Storm. Progress! Thumbs up all around.
PREDICTION: Toni Storm retains.
Winner Takes All Match for the AEW TBS Championship and NJPW STRONG Women's Championship: Mercedes Mone (c) vs. Stephanie Vaquer
Mercedes Mone gets back in the ring and New Japan basically says "Can we put that belt on her that we wanted to before she got injured?" At least, that's how it strikes me, where they want her to make appearances defending the STRONG title.
There's nothing wrong with that, of course. They had an investment in her, it didn't pay off yet, so let's revisit it. But it's crazy how many title unifications (especially ones that aren't actually title unifications, but just someone holding multiple belts at the same time) have been happening in wrestling the past year, let alone the past 3 years. It's more and more of a thing, despite there being more and more talent to pick from to spread the wealth.
Bet the house on Mercedes. I'd crap myself if she dropped the TBS title this quickly.
Orange Cassidy vs. Zack Sabre Jr.
Glass half full? These two will have an awesome match. Glass half empty? Why, when there's a crossover potential for multiple companies, and tons of options available, are we just getting a rematch from last year in a sense? At least this time, it's a singles bout, so we'll see a different dynamic. I just would rather have seen something a little different...possibly...until I eat my words and this ends up being awesome.
PREDICTION: Zack Sabre Jr. wins.
Trios Match: The Elite (Matthew Jackson, Nicholas Jackson, and Kazuchika Okada) vs. Scissor Ace (Anthony Bowens, Max Caster, and Hiroshi Tanahashi) (with "Daddy Ass" Billy Gunn)
It's a good thing they added Hiroshi Tanahashi to this, or it would have been yet another non-crossover match. Functionally, it still doesn't serve too much of a purpose other than stalling for The Acclaimed's title shot, but that's okay. People will mark out over Tanahashi and Okada being in the ring.
PREDICTION: Scissor Ace wins.
Singles Match for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship: Jon Moxley (c) vs. Tetsuya Naito
I'll likely elaborate more on this, but my simple point of view is that Naito is just winning the title back and there isn't much more to it than that.
PREDICTION: Tetsuya Naito wins the title.
Men's Owen Hart Cup Tournament First Round Match: Bryan Danielson vs. Shingo Takagi
It's cool to see the crossover thing here, and for Danielson to cross another name off his list. Since Danielson is going to be one of the biggest focal points of this tournament, I can't imagine Takagi is advancing here.
PREDICTION: Bryan Danielson wins.
Singles Match: MJF vs. Hechicero
I'll be honest, as of right now, I haven't seen anything of Hechicero. I missed his AEW appearances. Therefore, he's just a guy I know nothing about, which doesn't mean anything to me. Hopefully, I'll get an opportunity to watch something of his beforehand, or I might just go ahead and wait to see this match.
PREDICTION: MJF wins.
Trios Match: The Learning Tree (Chris Jericho, Big Bill with Bryan Keith) and Jeff Cobb vs. Samoa Joe, HOOK & Katsuyori Shibata
As with the other trios match, including Jeff Cobb fills the Tanahashi position in justifying it being on this crossover card. It's totally random, but hey, whatever. I'm down to see Cobb in the ring with those three opponents. The Learning Tree is likely going to get the victory here, in part due to Bryan Keith interfering. I'm not convinced he's in the slightest bit legitimately hurt, so it's just a ploy to play gotcha, which should work perfectly fine.
PREDICTION: The Learning Tree and Jeff Cobb wins.
