Without further ado, let's inspect the biggest takeaways of the week!
IMPACT WRESTLING: AUGUST 3, 2023 RESULTS
#5 - I’m Too Tired To Think Of A Pun
It was a mixed bag of a night for Zachary Wentz and Trey Miguel on this week’s Impact. They were fined two weeks pay Scott D’Amore, and informed that if they interfered in any tag tournament matches, they’d be suspended indefinitely, but they were allowed to keep their spots in the tag tournament.
In the closing match of this week’s episode, they would take on the frenemies pairing of Speedball Mike Bailey, who was taking an optimistic approach to the encounter, and his grouchy friend Jonathan Gresham. A tightly worked match, it would end as most Rascalz matches have as of late, with a bit of distraction and spray paint helping them pick up the win.
#4 - Something Special, Part 2
Squash matches rarely make for entertaining television in the modern era of wrestling, but there is no denying that watching Jake Something absolutely mow down a jobber is a fun watch. Continuing his momentum since returning at Slammiversary, the former Cousin Jake picked up the win in quick fashion, sending his opponent Into the Void.
#3 - Waking A Sleeping Celestial
Set up two weeks prior on BTI when Heath hit the Angels with the Wake Up Call after Angels won a match through nefarious means, Heath faced the former Design member in a surprisingly long match this week.
Angels is one of the most underrated heels currently working, and Heath is a master at endearing himself to a crowd. Put those two together, and give it a decent amount of time, and you have effortless viewing, with a cool finish. Angels would go for his spinning heel kick but Heath would dodge, hitting a disoriented Angels with the Wake Up Call.
#2 - Put Your Best Neon Foot Forward
Knockouts champion Trinity would open the show this week, hyping up the Chicago crowd. She would soon be interrupted by Deonna Purrazzo, with the two reading barbs until being interrupted by the Coven. This would lead to a brawl, and an immediate impromptu match made by Santino Marella.
The Coven would dominate for most of the match, which made sense, seeing as they had the same goal in mind. When Purrazzo and Trinity were able to get some momentum, they outclassed the Coven, but ultimately, a house divided is a house that cannot stand, and the Coven secured the win after Kilynn King hit the King’s Curse on Deonna.
#1 - Someone’s Been Reading Sophocles
It’s been a while since we had some truly cinematic fun in Impact. The Death Dollz alone can’t carry the genre, and with the recently returned Eric Young on the scene, they won’t need to. This week’s episode ended with “unaired footage” of the confrontation that supposedly saw Deaner kill and usurious Young nine months prior, clarifying that no, Deaner didn’t kill him.
Because, invoking countless movies and books and such, you can’t kill an idea. The video showed, after the fight, a monologing Young climbing onto his motorcycle and driving down the road, saying he isn’t dead yet.
What a weird media we like, folks. There’s nothing like it.
