Without further ado, let's inspect the biggest takeaways of the week!
IMPACT WRESTLING: JULY 27, 2023 RESULTS
#5 - Roll-Up Of The Dice
Close allies Zicky Dice and Johnny Swinger faced each other in a Loser Leaves Impact match this week, with the added stipulation that should Swinger win the match, not only will he keep his job, but he’ll also get the World title shot he’s been chasing for so long.
A comedy-based match containing references to the Finger Poke of Doom, the “I’m sorry, I love you” quote from Shawn Michaels vs Ric Flair, and a lot of eyes rakes, this is easy, old-style fun that doesn’t overstay its welcome. Swinger wins after clotheslining Dice out of the mini ring cart on the outside, seemingly banishing his protege Dice from Impact.
#4 - Under A Luna Eclipse
Dani Luna and new Knockouts World Champion Trinity faced the Coven in tag team action this week, in what was another effortlessly entertaining match. Lena’s strength was a great match for Kilynn King, and when the Coven gained the advantage, Luna played the face in peril amazingly.
The real star of the match however was Trinity, who really woke the fans up with her hot tag. The former Naomi clearly has the backing of Impact management, racking up win after win, including tonight, where she got the pinfall win after hitting a Bubba Bomb-esque manoeuvre.
#3 - Quintessential Distraction
After confronting each other backstage last week, Masha Slamovich, backed by MK Ultra partner Killer Kelly, and Giselle Shaw, backed by her usual entourage of Jai Vidal and Savannah Evans, faced each other in singles action. Much more tightly paced than the previous Knockouts match, Giselle continues to be one of the premier heels of the company, while Masha continues to be as captivating as ever, her explosive, unpredictable ring work a pleasure to work.
Control would go back and forth throughout the match, but towards the end as Masha was in control once more, Jai Vidal would hop on the apron, trying to distract Masha. He would be dealt with by Kelly, who was then dealt with by Savannah. The distraction of all this allowed Shaw to roll Masha up and then land the Denouement knee strike to get the win.
#2 - I Am Once Again Asking For Design Puns
Eric Young made his in-ring return to Impact on AXS TV this week, facing Nick Aldis in a match that was set up last week. Young, who entered with new music and a new, Doctor Doom style mask, played the resilient face against the subdued, evasive heel Aldis likes to play. Young would repeat history from nine years prior, defeating Aldis with a piledriver.
After the match, Deaner and Kon of the Design would attack Young, Young ensuring 3 chokeslams from Kon and an Antidote DDT from Deaner, no one coming to help the former Violent by Design leader.
#1 - Paint the Town Green
In what was the most engaging match of the week, Speedball Mike Bailey battled Rascalz member Zachary Wentz, backed as always by Trey Miguel.
Wentz has been such a natural heel since his return, you have to respect him. It’s in how he moves, how he performs his moves, in every inch of his performance. And I’ve long made it known that Speedball is one of my favourite faces, and tonight he was, as always, loveable, vicious, and thrilling.
Miguel, as always, ran interference throughout. When he got caught, and the referee attempted to eject him from ringside, Miguel refused, arguing with the ref and giving Wentz the perfect distraction to use the green spray paint can on the face of Speedball, before landing the Headlock DDT to secure the win.
