Without further ado, let's inspect the biggest takeaways of the week!
IMPACT WRESTLING: JUNE 15, 2023 RESULTS
#5 - All the Major Players (Aside from Myers and Cardona)
The opening segment to this week’s episode of Impact had a few twists and turns to say the least, but featured many of Impact’s current main event talent, and so requires coverage, no matter how frustrating writing said coverage may be. Buckle up.
The segment started with a promo from the new X Division And Impact World Champions respectively, in Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley. They were then interrupted by Shelley’s Slammiversary challenger, Nick Aldis, who cut a respectful promo of his own.
He was then interrupted by a burp-filled Trey Miguel, who was quickly cut off by Sabin, but then received backup in the form of Sheldon Jean and Kenny King. When a 3 Vs 3 fight was proposed by the Guns and Aldis, and being considered by the heels, Giselle Shaw and her entourage would interrupt, using this time to talk about Trinity.
Trinity would then interrupt Shaw, almost throwing hands with Shaw as well as Jai Vidal, but this was interrupted by Knockouts World Champion, Deonna Purrazzo, who was on the side of the faces, but exchanged some snipes with Trinity, which set off a trend of passive aggressive remarks. Just as everyone was about to come to blows, D.O.A. Santino Marella would walk out, making a 10 person tag between everyone in the ring the night’s official main event.
And, breathe.
#4 - Decay’s Decay
For what this writer is sure is the third time in recent memory, Decay were used as the jobbers of the Impact tag division this week, as they took on the reigning Impact World Tag Team Champions, ABC.
I won’t pretend that it wasn’t an enjoyable match, because it was. Crazy Steve’s antics, plus the incredible athleticism of Black Taurus paired well with the high energy, high intensity style of Austin and Bey, but Decay deserve better than this. The match itself lasted less than five minutes, and came to an end when ABC hit the One Two Sweet.
#3 - It’s Hard to Think of Design Puns
In one of the more interesting backstage segments from this week’s Impact, dissension started to creep into the Design. After a quick recap of Against All Odds, which saw OVE defeat the the Design, Angels and Deaner were seen clashing backstage, blaming each other for their loss. Deaner claimed Angels didn’t follow the plan, and Angels likened Deaner to the very thing he came to Impact to escape (his toxic treatment by the rest of the Dark Order in AEW.)
It fell to the big man, Kon, to point out this is exactly what Sami Callihan wanted, to destroy the Design from the inside out. It seems the war between the two factions may not be over yet.
#2 - Another Week, Another Main Event Tag Part 2
The aforementioned 10 person tag to close out this week’s Impact was, while a tired trope by Impact at this point, very enjoyable to watch. It went a bit long in places for this writer’s taste, but it certainly wasn’t awful either.
Stacked with talent, the match was bound to be good. After the Knockouts of the match had an exchange at the start, the story of the match was Chris Sabin enduring punishment from all the heels, playing up to Sabin’s amazing selling. It fell to his longtime tag partner, Alex Shelley, to pick up the win however, which he did with the ShellShock.
After the bell, Nick Aldis would feign respect, wanting to hand the Impact World title to Shelley, only to crack Shelley with the belt, before legging it to avoid the wrath of Sabin. As Tom Hannifin said on commentary, “The notorious Nick Aldis has finally stood up.”
#1 - Swann Lake, Moose Country
Anyone who’s been watching Impact Wrestling on a long term basis will tell you Rich Swann and Moose have amazing chemistry together. Former tag partners turned rivals, Moose and Swann have had a number of great clashes, their bout for the Impact World title back in 2021 being the standout. This week, they did not fail to live up to expectations.
In what was undoubtedly the match of the week, Swann and Moose clashed once again, after miscommunication cost their team the 8-4-1 match at Against All Odds. Moose brought the power and athleticism, Swann brought the aerial excellence and heart, and together, they made magic once again. If you watch one thing from this week’s Impact, I urge you to watch this.
Swann would pick up the win with a Jackknife cover, after an attempted spear by Moose.
