Welcome to another edition of CALL THE SPOT ON THE CARD, where we present a list of wrestlers and you must choose what place on the WWE Roster Hierarchy they should be put in: 1) Main Event, 2) Upper Midcard, 3) Midcard, 4) Jobber, or 5) Released (or any alternative extra categories that may be added for bigger lists).
The rules are that each spot must be filled and only one person can be in each spot, so no ties can happen, nor can anyone opt out. No matter how difficult it might be, you have to pick.
This edition will focus on the men and women competing in the 2023 Money in the Bank ladder matches.
Since there are six and seven people in these matches, the ranking structure is different for each. The men's will have the Hall of Fame option added above Main Event as the top tier goal as well as Lower Midcard to round things out. The women's match, with only six, will just have Hall of Fame added.
Major Note: I haaaaaated doing this this year. None of the options felt like they really fit, and I really considered not doing it at all. But that in and of itself made it interesting, as it forced me to HAVE to pick people, which is the exercise this is all about. So before you read any of the positions, keep in mind that I think every one of these Superstars is well deserving of being above the midcard level at the very least, and this does not reflect where I think they truly should be placed on the WWE hierarchy beyond this edition of Call the Spot on the Card. This is just for shits and giggles.
2023 WOMEN'S MONEY IN THE BANK LADDER MATCH PARTICIPANTS
Bayley vs. Becky Lynch vs. Iyo Sky vs. Trish Stratus vs. Zelina Vega vs. Zoey Stark
6) RELEASED = Zelina Vega
Ouch. Already, we're in a bad spot, as I wouldn't want to release Zelina Vega by any means. However, I often treat this as a mercy rule and a cop out, and that's what I'm going to do here. My site, my rules!
By that, I mean releasing Zelina Vega takes her out of the Latino World Order, which is a shame, but it allows her to go to All Elite Wrestling. There, as a member of that roster, she could help bolster the AEW women's division as a veteran who has more of a chance of winning something like the TBS Championship, while I don't think she's going to win the two world titles in WWE any time soon.
Plus, she'd be in the same company as her husband and have more relaxed rules with her Twitch account, cosplaying and modeling gigs, and so on.
But, of course, outside of this game, I fully support Zelina getting a solid push in WWE as my preference. I'm more of a fan of her than a lot of others and I've wanted her to win a title—even if it is just for a short run—since when she was even in NXT.
5) JOBBER = Bayley
Realistically, making Bayley a jobber is awful. However, if there's anyone who could pull it off on this list and NOT lose momentum, its her.
She's already a future Hall of Famer. Her career is solid in that way. Factoring in how she's been overtaken by others like Becky Lynch on the priority scale as well as her ability to do comedic work and her history as an underdog babyface, I think this would actually benefit her, rather than be a problem.
A stint as a jobber could reset her character back to where fans were clamoring for her to get a push. Then, eventually, she could work her way back up to the main event. These Call the Spot lists aren't meant to be forever, remember?
4) MIDCARD = Zoey Stark
This is the spot she's already in. No need to change anything. She'll advance in her career, but for now, there are bigger fish to fry.
3) UPPER MIDCARD = Iyo Sky
Iyo has more than enough potential, skill and talent to be the Main Event option. However, look at who we have left. I could make the argument to put here there and bump Becky Lynch up to Hall of Fame, while bringing Trish Stratus down to Upper Midcard as someone who puts over other Superstars, but it's easier to go with the reality of the situation.
I do think Iyo is probably going to win the Money in the Bank ladder match this year, though.
2) MAIN EVENT = Becky Lynch
Duh.
1) HALL OF FAME = Trish Stratus
Duh, again. She's the only actual Hall of Famer on the list. If you treat the HOF spot as a retirement angle, she's the one who would upset the least by going away, as she's only around now as a part-time special act.
2023 MEN'S MONEY IN THE BANK LADDER MATCH PARTICIPANTS
Butch vs. Damian Priest vs. LA Knight vs. Logan Paul vs. Ricochet vs. Santos Escobar vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
7) RELEASED = Ricochet
I would absolutely hate to see Ricochet go, but he's the guy out of all these that I think would have the best chances to succeed in AEW if he did. Granted, I don't think Tony Khan would roll out the red carpet by immediately giving him the AEW World Championship on his first night, but he could be a bigger player there than I think a lot of the others on this list.
I gave a lot of consideration to putting him in the Hall of Fame spot, funny enough. But you'll see why I didn't.
6) JOBBER = Butch
Is Pete Dunne great in the ring? Of course. But his size is certainly one of his biggest detractors in WWE, as well as how he's not much of a promo guy. I'd love to see him at least win the Intercontinental Championship at some point, but on this list, I have to put him in the Jobber spot, unfortunately.
As per usual, there are just others who I think are in better spots right now to serve higher roles.
5) LOWER MIDCARD = Logan Paul
Is it cheating to say Lower Midcard can still be a featured act with matches all across the board, but that he ultimately loses to nearly everyone, and he's constituted "lower" midcard cause he's rarely around?
Realistically, Logan Paul is such an oddity that he's in a special category outside the normal parameters of Call the Spot. I can't by any means give him the closest thing to "guest appearance" which would be Hall of Fame, and I don't want to put him any higher, so he just goes here by default.
4) MIDCARD = Santos Escobar
Great performer. Underutilized. Give him a championship. But right now, he's playing second-fiddle to Rey Mysterio.
3) UPPER MIDCARD = LA Knight
Yeah.
2) MAIN EVENT = Damian Priest
A lot of people would probably put LA Knight in this spot. The reason I don't have him here is because I think Priest is the more established of the two who would be an easier to rely on mainstay in the main event, whereas LA Knight's popularity is still in its infancy and I'm not sure if the fans will continue to be as loud cheering for him in the long run.
Priest has the presence and the in-ring talent to pull off winning a world title, for sure.
1) HALL OF FAME = Shinsuke Nakamura
This is interesting, as none of these guys are at Hall of Fame level yet
to such an astounding degree that it puts them in any obvious spots. I
would argue Nakamura might be the best bet for that, though, as he's not only won the NXT Championship and the Royal Rumble, but he's had his New Japan career and would be the one I would most likely see stepping into a part-time role out of this bunch.
WHO WOULD YOU PUT IN WHICH SPOTS?
