Without further ado, let's inspect the biggest takeaways of the week!
IMPACT WRESTLING: MAY 12, 2023 RESULTS
#5 - 17 is the (Not) Magic Number
It has been 17 years since Rhyno last won a world championship. He received a shot at a world title this week, challenging Steve Maclin in a No DQ match for the Impact World Championship.
Since this was Maclin’s first defense, the result was never really in question, especially not against a now 47-year-old challenger. But it was admittedly very fun to see two of Impact’s best hosses come to blows. Everyone loves Rhyno, and Maclin did some great work here.
After retaining his title, Maclin would Pillmanise the leg of Rhyno with a steel chair and a shovel, leading to Scott D’Amore making Maclin’s title defense against PCO at Under Siege into a No DQ match as a result.
#4 - This Just Absolutely Rocked
To start this week’s episode of Impact, two of the most intense athletes Impact have did battle as Masha Slamovich took on Killer Kelly. The two have had scuffles before in multi-man matches, and this was a delightfully stiff, fun to watch back and forth match.
Masha seemed done for, locked in the Killer Clutch, before performing the Bret Hart escape in the corner and rolling Kelly up to get the win. An irate Kelly would keep the Killer Clutch locked in however, making Masha seemingly pass out. This writer hopes we can see more of these two against each other in the near future.
#3 - Return of the King’s Lynn
Nick Aldis had his first Impact match in 6 years this week, facing off against Sheldon Jean. This was as part of Aldis and Kenny King’s seemingly brewing feud, with King having taken Jean under his wing in recent weeks.
Just like with Maclin and Rhyno, the result of this match was never really in question, with Aldis scoring the submission win with the King’s Lynn Cloverleaf, but it was nonetheless entertaining, and so will be the eventual King/Aldis match.
#2 - is a Crowd, 3 is a Faction
While this writer questioned the outcome of this tag team bout, I have to admit, I think this has potential. Allow me to explain.
Decay’s Crazzy Steve and Black Taurus were taking on the Good Hands this week, and as you might expect, the majority of the match was in Decay’s favour. Thanks to interference from a certain Major Player in Brian Myers, the Good Hands, however, would pick up the win.
Now. Does this writer think using Decay to take this loss, to serve this function, is a dumb idea? Yes, absolutely. But I also think this new version of the Learning Tree could be a great heel force in Impact. If nothing else, the Good Hands fit the tutelage of Brian Myers much more than Bully Ray,
#1 - And Still…
Rounding out this week’s triology of “result never being in question” matches, Jordynne Grace and Deonna Purrazzo, opponents at Under Siege, challenged the Coven for their Knockouts Tag Titles this week. The title of this entry should tell you how that match ended.
More notable, however, was what happened after the bell. The Coven’s post match attack on Jordynne Grace was interrupted by the most recent Impact signee, Trinity. Trinity, who has an open contract for a match at Under Siege, dispatched of both of the Coven, before shaking Grace’s hand. It made for a great closing moment, and it threw some uncertainty as to the results of a PPV title match into play.
