The WWE SmackDown Women's Championship has changed hands as Rhea Ripley defeated Charlotte Flair to win the title at WrestleMania 39 on April 1, 2023.
My immediate reaction: This absolutely needed to happen, and the match was fantastic. It's 3 years too late to come around to Ripley beating Flair. I've spoken time and time again about how WWE did Ripley dirty with WrestleMania 36, and followed it up even more poorly with Rhea failing to beat Charlotte after that, too. This does not make up for it where it "was all leading somewhere" or "it was all building up to this and worth it". It is only the right call for this particular night to not make it a trifecta of bad Flair over Ripley decisions. Now, give Rhea a legit title reign, and ideally, have her beat Flair another couple of times and we might be talking. But at least this match was awesome and they did that the right way all throughout.
Since this happened, be sure to check out the updated full list of title changes for this year and the list of current champions and my predictions for who will take the belts away from them.
