WWE Night of Champions 2023 Spoilers |
World Heavyweight Championship Match: Seth Rollins vs. AJ Styles
I still feel like not only does this championship feel like a bronze medal, and the "I can't beat Roman Reigns" title, but that this should just be the WWE Championship instead of a new belt, and on top of all that, I don't think any of the matches they have lined up feel strong enough.
Yes, Rollins against AJ Styles is a marquee match when it comes to how big of stars they are. I'm not arguing that point. But to kickstart the inaugural championship for this and to try to put it on par with Roman? Nope. It isn't pulling that off for me. This VERY much feels like what they're flat out even calling it on television, which is "the consolation prize" and we all know this belt is eventually going to be unified, too, so it's just going to be a couple champions who are filling a footnote in the history books.
I maintain my position that this shouldn't be a third world title, but that they should have had Roman Reigns vacate the WWE Championship and this should have just been the follow-up for that.
Rollins will win this, for sure. And he'll be cashed-in on by the Money in the Bank winner, probably, and he won't still be champion come WrestleMania 40.
Brock Lesnar vs. Cody Rhodes
Gotta keep Cody Rhodes away from that championship, and you gotta give Lesnar his win back, right? Cody can only beat Brock through what feels like a bit of a fluke, and to "give him more adversity", he's going to get wrecked here.
PREDICTION: Brock Lesnar wins.
Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship Match: Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn (c) vs. Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa
Bahahahahaha they finally pull enough strings to get Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens to fight on a Saudi Arabia card, and it is Night of Champions—where ALL the belts are supposed to be defended—and they put Roman Reigns in a tag team title match to avoid having him defend the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, even though he didn't defend it at Backlash, either.
No wonder he's going to remain champion forever. He won't have to even defend it, I guess.
Ridiculous that the World Heavyweight Championship isn't the WWE Championship and they aren't just continuing the blue universal title strap thing instead, and not having him defend here.
I assume Owens and Zayn retain due to some miscommunication from The Usos, wherein Sikoa takes the pin.
Intercontinental Championship Match: Gunther (c) vs. Mustafa Ali
I didn't anticipate Mustafa Ali would get this title shot, originally. Not only was he not someone who was on my radar for a big push, but he's also classified a free agent, which gave me the impression WWE didn't know what to do with those guys.
Positive-Ali is an interesting tweak to his gimmick, but no matter how optimistic he'll be, he's coming up short. No way in hell is Gunther dropping this belt to Ali at this show.
Update: Poor Ali got BURIED on the go-home Raw. Yeeeeeeeesh.
Becky Lynch vs. Trish Stratus
On paper, this is huge for an undercard match. However, I think we all know this isn't going to exactly be a Match of the Year candidate on par with if Becky was in the ring with someone who was in their prime and had no ring rust.
Raw Women's Championship Match: Bianca Belair (c) vs. Asuka
Sigh. Are Belair and Asuka among the best ever? Of course. But is this not just a lame, lazy rehash of what we just had at WrestleMania, which wasn't even a hot feud to begin with? You're damn right. They didn't even put any effort into the Mania match. Now, all they've done is waited several weeks for this to become even more stale, and then go "I don't know...maybe Asuka spits in Belair's face again? That's good enough!"
I'd legitimately be more interested in a PROMO SEGMENT on this card where they address the fact that the Raw and SmackDown women's titles are on the wrong brands, rather than just doing a copy and paste of a lukewarm feud just to see what could be "a good match" for a few minutes. Because that's all we're getting, at most.
Belair should be fighting someone new. The whole point of the draft is to shake things up and not have the same people continue to feud with each other.
SmackDown Women's Championship Match: Rhea Ripley (c) vs. Natalya
Simply put, Ripley isn't dropping the belt right now, least of all to Nattie. That's your full breakdown as that's the entirety of this feud/match/segment.
PREDICTION: Rhea Ripley retains.
