IMPACT WRESTLING: APRIL 14, 2023 RESULTS
#5 - Hardcore Advantage
Impact this week opened with a match deciding which team would have the advantage between Team Bully and Team Dreamer in the Hardcore War match at Rebellion. Representing Team Bully was Kenny King, and representing the babyface team was Frankie Kazarian. As can be expected by two veterans of wrestling, this was a solid, back and forth match.
If that sounds a little nondescript, it’s not meant as an attack. This match served its function, and served it well. It won’t make any Match of the Year lists, but nor will it reach any Worst lists either. After interference from Brian Myers and Moose, Kenny King picked up the win and advantage for Team Bully.
#4 - Pre-emptive (Cobra) Strike
In a preview of Rebellion, the team of Joe Hendry and Dirty Dango faced the Design’s Callihan and Angels in a fun tag match. Continuing the storyline of Callihan’s slow initiation into the Design, Callihan and Angels worked well together for most of the match, but when Callihan delayed proceedings for his “Thumbs up, thumbs down” catchphrase, this allowed Hendry to move, which meant Callihan’s accidentally struck Angels.
The match broke down from here for the Design, with Hendry and Dango picking up the win soon after. After the match, the Design would attack the comedy duo, until Director of Authority Santino Marella made the save, ending in Angels taking the Cobra.
Just a good time all around really.
#3 - Can’t Think of a Pun For This One
It was a rough week for the Death Dollz ahead of their title rematch at Rebellion. Backstage, Jessicka was incensed and wanted to retrieve Taya Valkyrie from the Undead Realm. Rosemary convinced Jessicka to let them go alone and retrieve Taya, but when they tried to do so, the coffin they use as a portal was empty. Blocked. Putting this down to the work of the Coven, Jessicka was even more pissed.
The match itself was entertaining, as the Death Dollz always are. Wilde has really started to shine as a heel, and it’s nice to see KiLynn King have something to do. After distraction from King, Wilde picked up the win with a Spinning Fisherman Buster.
#2 - Bull In A Four Man
Black Taurus is a gem of a worker. Able to switch between convincing power and extraordinary speed seemingly at the flip of a switch, he was the star of tonight’s four-man X Division match. And that isn’t to discredit the other workers in the match. Lunch Dorado is always a delight, Rich Swann is entertaining as ever, and it was nice to see Laredo Kid back in Impact after last year’s catastrophic injury.
But there was no denying this match was about Black Taurus. Whether he was lifting two men on his own for a hybrid Tower of Doom, or doing a corkscrew dive through the ropes, you couldn’t take your eyes off of Taurus for a second. While Taurus didn’t win the match-Laredo Kid picked up the win with the Cyclorama-it’s clear to anyone watching that Impact have gold in the form of Taurus.
#1 - Get Well Soon
To close the show, a pre-taped promo featuring Mickie James cleared the air on the Knockouts Championship situation heading into Rebellion. Clearly emotional, James thanked fans for following along on the Last Rodeo, and expressed frustration that it had to end this way. She confirmed that she was, unfortunately, unable to compete at Rebellion, and so was relinquishing the Knockouts title.
Mickie left the title and her hat in the ring, severity of her injury, and career status unknown. I think we can all agree someone as influential and historic as Mickie deserves a better end than this, but if it is the end, and it is still an if at time of writing, I think we can also all agree, Mickie’s had a hell of a career.
Looking ahead however, this means it will be Deonna Purrazzo Vs Jordynne Grace for the Knockouts title at Rebellion. These two have faced off for that title multiple times in the past, and have always delivered. While the situation that caused this matchup is less than ideal, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited to see them square off once more.
