Posted by Cherry Turner Friday, March 10, 2023

Welcome to another edition of POINTS OF IMPACT—a breakdown of the top moments of this week's edition of Impact Wrestling.

This segment will fill you in on the most important parts of the show worth checking out or keeping up to date with, in case you missed this episode of Impact Wrestling.

Without further ado, let's inspect the biggest takeaways of the week!

IMPACT WRESTLING: MARCH 9, 2023 RESULTS

#5 - Step Six

This week’s impact saw Step Six in the Seveb Deadly Steps to Callihan’s initiation to the Design. Facing off against the War Machine Rhino, the latest of the Impact roster to try to talk some sense into Callihan, the two had quite the entertaining match.

The two men, of similar stature, shoved and punched and threw each other around, working a physical, back and forth affair. Callihan was his vicious self, thumbing at the eyes of Rhino, but Rhino responses with big moves, like an apron slam. The end of the match, and Step Six, saw Kon hit Callihan with the chair, payback for what happened at No Surrender, allowing Rhino to hit the Gore and pick up the win.

#4 - Desert Showdown

Throughout the show, we saw footage of PCO and Eddie Edwards, travelling to meet each other and fight in the desert. Just before tonight’s main event, the two squared off in an endearingly camp, over the top fight scene one might have come to expect from Impact and their slightly supernatural side.

The segement ended when, as PCO went for the kill with the shovel, he was hit by a car by an unseen driver, who helped Edwards make a hasty escape. If he can survive being buried alive, he can survive being hit by a car. This isn’t the last time Edwards and PCO will face off.

#3 - A Coven of Two

While we’re on the topic of the supernatural, it’s worth mentioning the new stable (and new challengers for the Death Dollz) that formed this week. Killer Kelly called out Taylor Wilde, still angry about their failed attempt to lift the tag titles a few weeks ago. After a heated exchange between the two knockouts, KiLynn King would attack Kelly, aligning herself with Wilde.

Backstage, the Death Dollz offered assistance to Kelly in dealing with supernatural enemies, assistance that was turned down. After Kelly left, the Death Dollz and the newly formed Coven of Wilde and King settled the details for a match next week, the Death Dollz wagering their tag titles, and Wilde wagering her right to practice the “Dark Arts.”

This was entertaining as always with the Death Dollz, and it’s nice to see King get an opportunity.

#2 - Main Event Meddling

In the evening’s main event, Giselle Shaw, flanked by Jai Vidal and Savannah Evans, challenged Mickie James for the Knockouts World Championship, with Deonna Purrazzo on commentary. While the match itself was good, as one would expect from two talented women such as James and Shaw, the ending is most likely going to garner more headlines than most of the in-ring action.

Giselle’s entourage would try their usual interference tricks. This worked in Shane’s favour, allowing her to roll Mickie up, but before the referee stopped bothering with Vidal, Deonna would take her revenge from No Surrender’s pre-show, and push Giselle back, costing her the win as Mickie pinned her in the roll-up.

Mickie escapes with her title again, destined to defend it against Jordynne Grace at Sacrifice. And Shaw and Purrazzo don’t seem done with each other yet.

#1 - Technical Wrestling Heaven

In what was, without a doubt, the match of the night, Jonathan Gresham faced Kushida in singles action. It was not a match of many flips, nor many punches. No, this was a wrestling match. If the Pure style of match is something that normally tickles your fancy, I can’t recommend this match enough.

The opening salvo of the match was built around submissions from a handshake, and as the match progressed, the two men worked over each other’s arms, only occasionally targeting other body parts. Even when they did, it backfired, Gresham almost countering a Kushida German suplex into a Kimura. It’s as if this match was meant to be worked a certain way.

In the end, after frantic exchanges, Kushida picked up the win, earning an instant tap with the Hoverboard Lock. After the bell, the two shook hands once more, both of them clearly wanting a round 2 at some point. Should that round 2 ever happen, be it in Impact or elsewhere, it will have at least one viewer in this writer. What a match, and what a show.
