Welcome to another edition of POINTS OF IMPACT—a breakdown of the top moments of this week's edition of Impact Wrestling.
This segment will fill you in on the most important parts of the show worth checking out or keeping up to date with, in case you missed this episode of Impact Wrestling.
Without further ado, let's inspect the biggest takeaways of the week!
IMPACT WRESTLING: MARCH 2, 2023 RESULTS
#5 - A King vs. A Knight
After losing feuds to Mike Bailey and Rich Swann recently, Kenny King would look to regain momentum this week, facing New Japan import and fellow KK initial owner Kevin Knight in singles action.
Knight, decked in Kushida-inspired gear, played the role of the athletic underdog, utilising lots of springboard offensive manoeuvres, whereas King would play the savy veteran, punishing the spine of Knight with backbreakers, cutting off Knight’s momentum where he could. After intercepting Knight on the ropes, a Royal Flush secured the win for King.
#4 - It Ain’t Over Yet
After provoking PCO at No Surrender last week, the X Division Champion Trey Miguel faced the French Canadian Frankenstein in non-title singles action this week, and the two put on a surprisingly entertaining match.
A cat and mouse affair, Miguel clearly feared PCO, alternating between playing the cowardly heel and taking shots at PCO whenever the opportunity afforded itself. PCO was on his usual good form, taking a brutal back bump on the outside from a missed dive.
This match wouldn’t see a decisive winner however, as Eddie Edwards would launch a shovel-based assault, getting the match thrown out. Edwards would eat a chokeslam for his trouble, as well as a PCOsault alongside the security team. PCO stands tall, for now.
#3 - Two for the Price of One
Surprisingly, there were no Knockouts matches this week, the women of Impact instead (on the main show at least, this writer didn’t catch BTI this week) getting promos and backstage segments.
Mickie James would come down to the ring, talking about her win over Masha Slamovich at No Surrender, and turning her attention to Jordynne Grace. She would be interrupted by the Quintessential Diva, Giselle Shaw, who demanded a match with Mickie. Gail Kim would walk out, making the match official next week.
Later, Jordynne Grace would express frustration to Santino Marella backstage, and clarified that whoever wins out of Mickie and Giselle, Jordynne wants next, invoking her rematch clause. This was made official, for Sacrifice
#2 - The Mighty Don’t Win
Shane Haste, of New Japan’s The Mighty Don’t Kneel, put in one hell of a performance on Impact this week, squaring off against one of the hardest working wrestlers on the planet today, Speedball Mike Bailey.
The former Slapjack played the role of the cowardly but capable heel to perfection, countering a Speedball dive with a European Uppercut and apron Uranage, really showing his vicious side. Speedball for his part was a endearing and fiery as ever, putting Haste away with an Ultima Weapon. This would have been match of the night, were it not for…
#1 - For Life
…the main event. What. A. Match.
Set up in the show’s opening segment, the Motor City Machine Guns closed the show by defending their titles against Bullet Club’s Ace Austin and Chris Bey, who along with KENTA, scored a win over the Guns and Kushida at No Surrender.
While the BC were clearly the heels in kayfabe, and while the Impact faithful will never turn against the Machine Guns, it was clear to everyone who should win the main event, and fortunately, Impact management listened. The night’s main event saw the BC, young, innovate and athletic, square off against a more cunning, clever version of the Machine Guns, who worked as the heels of the match.
The Machine Guns worked over the arm of Bey, and Austin ate a CradleShock after trying to save Bey from the Border City Stretch. It looked like the champs would retain for much of the match’s closing stretch, but with youth, the fans and fate on their side, Bullet Club got the win after nailing the One Two Sweet combo, becoming your new Impact World Tag Team champions.
What a reign this will be. And what a good cool-down episode this was.
