Welcome to a special edition of POINTS OF IMPACT—a breakdown of the top moments of Impact Wrestling.
This segment will fill you in on the most important parts of the show worth checking out or keeping up to date with, in case you missed this Impact Wrestling special event.
Without further ado, let's inspect the biggest takeaways from No Surrender 2023!
IMPACT WRESTLING: NO SURRENDER 2023 RESULTS
#5 - Type His Name and He Appears
The Digital Media Championship match between Joe Hendry and Moose was everything one might expect from a Hendry match against a self-absorbed heel, and I mean that in a good way.
A “Dot Combat” match, this second in-ring encounter between Hendry and Moose was a technology-themed No DQ match, with weapons such as keyboards, RC cars, a Sega Dreamcast and even a VR headset used throughout. This match won't curry any favour with any Cornette types, but if you're looking for an entertaining bout that never overstays it's welcome, or you just want to see Hendry doing his thing and retaining his title, this is the match for you.
#4 - Pre-Show Excellence
The Countdown to No Surrender pre-show might not have been high priority viewing for many, but in this writer's opinion, the two matches featured were far from throwaway. Giselle Shaw and Deonna Purrazo started the evening with a great back and forth affair, Giselle getting the win with aid from Savannah Evans and Jai Vidal, and Jonathan Gresham Vs Speedball Mike Bailey is self explanatory in its greatness, Gresham securing the win with a Victory Roll after dodging an Ultima Weapon attempt.
It's free to watch on Impact's YouTube channel, and only a half hour of your time. Check it out.
#3 - Chair Design
In the opening match to the show proper, Kon took on Frankie Kazarian, with the Design and Sami Callihan at ringside in support of Kon. The match itself was decent, Kazarian making Kon look dominant and athletic while always trying to get back into things, but it is the finish of the match that piqued my interest.
As the Design distracted the referee, Sami Callihan stood near the ropes, chair in hand. With his back to the ring, Callihan swung the chair, presumably attempting to crack Kaz over the head with the steel, only to hit Kon instead after a change in direction by the Heavy Metal Rebel. This would allow Kaz to hit a slingshot cutter, and pick up the win.
Callihan's intentions were left intentionally ambiguous, and the story remains fresh and intriguing. That's all you can ask for really.
#2 - A Good Night to Be A Women's Champion
All the Knockouts gold was on the line at No Surrender, and all the Knockouts gold left with the same holders as the start of the evening.
A stiff, well-paced affair saw the Death Dollz retain against the Hex, a kick/Sickishi Driver combo sealing the deal and getting the pin for Valkyrie and Jessicka, and on the singles side of things, Mickie James would survive Masha Slamovich with veteran guile, getting the win with a roll-up counter to a monkey flip.
Slamovich and James worked a great match centred around mind games, Slamovich dominating James for much of the bout, Mickie staying alive with logical attacks like targeting the arm of Masha. The clip from this match you're most likely to see in the coming days however is Mickie biting the tongue of Masha. Ouch.
#1 - Time Machines and Title Scenes
Often when I'm watching Impact, I can take notes on the matches without pausing. I've been a wrestling fan for most of my life, I can sense patterns and flows in matches. It takes something special to make me put down my notes and just watch. Two matches really did that for me at No Surrender.
Time Machine (the Motor City Machine Guns) took on Bullet Club's Ace Austin, Chris Bey and KENTA in what was my personal favourite match of the night. The crowd loved all six men involved, and all six men brought it in the character and in-ring departments. Words cannot do it justice. Watch it.
Similarly, the 4 man Number One Contenders Match to decide the challenger for whoever won between Josh Alexander and Rich Swann was classic multi-man fun. Built around PCO as the unstoppable monster the other three banded together to take out, the French-Canadian Frankenstein almost had the match won with a PCOsault, but interference from Eddie Edwards and his trusty shovel allowed Steve Maclin to pick up the win. After over a year of big wins against big names, Maclin will finally get his shot against Josh Alexander, who retained in another great match against Rich Swann.
Excellent stuff all around. 3 hours you'll be glad you spent with Impact.
