Without further ado, let's inspect the biggest takeaways of the week!

IMPACT WRESTLING: FEBRUARY 26, 2023 RESULTS

#5 - Bully Ray Beats the Clock

Ahead of the first ever live Busted Open Radio tonight at No Surrender, Bully Ray and Tommy Dreamer competed in a Beat the Clock Challenge, the opportunity to speak first on the line. Dreamer and Bully chose each other’s opponents, with Dreamer having to face Hotch of the Good Hands, and Bully facing Bhupinder Gujjar.

Dreamer won his match with an Avalanche Dreamer Driver at 1:15, but Bully would win his match and the challenge by nailing Bhupinder with a chain-wrapped punch while the Good Hands distracted the referee. It wasn’t anything special, but it got young talent in the former of Bhupinder and the Good Hands on tv.

#4 - Well-Oiled Machine Guns

In the opening contest from this week’s episode, the team of Jonathan Gresham and Speedball Mike Bailey, who are set to battle each other tonight at No Surrender, faced off against the Motor City Machine Guns. An absolutely cracking opener, this had all you could want from a tag match.

Gresham and Speedball worked incredibly well together, targeting the knee of Alex Shelley throughout, and Shelley sold this knee like death, as well as being as innovative and smooth as ever alongside Sabin. The match is up on Impact’s YouTube for free, and I can’t recommend it enough. If you watch one match from tonight, make it this one.

#3 - Step Five

The so far excellent storyline between the Design and Sami Callihan progressed further this week, with Step Five of the Seven Deadly Steps taking place during the tag match between the Design and Kazarian and Yuya Uemura.

Deaner and Callihan’s dynamic throughout the match was captivating, Deaner telling Sami when to attack, when to tag in and out, with Sami obeying each time. This brought the Design success for much of the match, isolating Uemura for an extended heat segment, but in the end, the team of Uemura and Kazarian would pick up the win.

Callihan, going for the Cactus Driver 97, was told to tag in Deaner, which he went to do, before Deaner dropped off the apron. This distracted Sami long enough for the Crossface Chickenwing to be locked in by Kaz, earning the submission win. After the match, Deaner explained that Step Five was about loyalty, questioning Sami’s loyalty once more, and Sami re-affirming it.

Something will happen during Kon Vs Kazarian tomorrow. This writer can’t wait to see what.

#2 - Hex Marks the Spot (For Now)

In the only Knockouts match of the evening, the returning Allysin Kay of the Hex took on Taya Valkyrie of the Death Dollz, a preview of their Knockouts Tag Team Championship encounter at No Surrender. This wasn’t a pretty match, but it was certainly entertaining.

Kay and Valkyrie are both great powerhouses, and the two worked a stiff, intense match, Valkyrie clearly pissed off and insulted at the attack by the Hex weeks prior by order of Father James Mitchell. Valkyrie dominated for much of the match, but a Marti Belle distraction allowed Kay to hit the AK47, and pick up the win and momentum ahead of tonight.

#1 - Miguel’s Ticket to the Ball

In the main event of this week’s episode, Trey Miguel would defend his X Division Championship against Crazzy Steve of Decay, and to say this carried on the theme of ugly but entertaining matches would be an understatement.

This had all the staples one would expect from a Monster’s Ball, including a few tributes to the Monster Abyss himselt, such as the use of his signature weapon Janice, or the Black Hole Slam onto the thumbtacks. This match was certainly the domain of the challenger, but Miguel more than held up his end of the bargain, taking ridiculous bumps throughout, playing the out of his comfort zone fighting champion beautifully.

The match walked the line between comedy and gore well. For every staple gun to the crotch, there was a metal spike usage, or another bump onto the tacks, or a Death Valley Driver through a table. In the end however, it would be a Cross Rhodes off the apron through a barbed wire board that ensured the win for Trey Miguel, who kept his X Division Championship, and survived the Monster’s Ball.

Barely.
