WWE SummerSlam 2023 Spoilers |
Tribal Combat Undisputed WWE Universal Championship Match: Roman Reigns (c) vs. Jey Uso
As expected, this is a No DQ match with a different name just to sound more interesting. IE, that means we'll get the same exact situation that we always get with Roman Reigns matches, but instead of needing a referee bump to explain the outside interference, we'll just get it outright.
Obviously, Jey Uso is not winning this match, nor the title. It's just not happening. So prepare yourselves for Reigns to stay on top, and since WWE wants to keep people playing around with this, I wouldn't be shocked at all if the big plan is to have Jimmy Uso cost Jey the match to do a Jimmy vs Jey feud going forward. They'll want to have a big angle for people to talk about and since Solo Sikoa can't cost Reigns the match (as, again, he's NOT dropping that belt to Jey), that's the only other thing they can do.
World Heavyweight Championship Match: Seth Rollins (c) vs. Finn Balor
...just this again? That's it? Lame. Incredibly lame. I wasn't even all that into their previous match, but for them to have Balor just say "Give me another match" and Rollins to go "Sure" and that's it? Boring.
WWE Women's Championship Triple Threat Match: Asuka (c) vs. Bianca Belair vs. Charlotte Flair
This isn't the direction I would have gone, I'll say that. Belair and Flair should be a WrestleMania match rather than a SummerSlam one with Asuka still feuding with Belair after their previous portion of the past year. I'd have gone with either Asuka vs. Flair alone or pulled the trigger on Iyo Sky to get involved.
I think there's a chance Iyo cashes in her Money in the Bank contract and wins the title here. In fact, I'm banking (pun) on that way more than Damian Priest doing that for the Rollins and Balor match, as that seems too obvious. But then again, I've been a little out of the loop from missing a few episodes, so maybe I'm missing something that points in a different direction.
(Stipulation Undetermined Match): Brock Lesnar vs. Cody Rhodes
Is this going to be a bullrope match or something else? That should help determine the quality. I'm sure this will have some fun elements to it, but it's ultimately just the second re-run of what we've seen before. I don't think Cody's been in a good spot after WrestleMania. They just seem to be giving him "something to do" without any real purpose, as I don't think this Lesnar feud is going to lead to him becoming world champion No. 1 contender or anything. Maybe I'm wrong, but I haven't been wrong the past few months, so I'm definitely getting the impression they think "Cody beating Brock means more than if we were to give him the world title that we're not comfortable taking off Reigns yet"
PREDICTION: Cody Rhodes wins.
Ricochet vs. Logan Paul
Yup. Just have them do their thing. I'm surprised they actually pulled the trigger on this, rather than trying to put Logan Paul in a match with a more marquee name. Good for Ricochet for getting this spot!
Intercontinental Championship Match: Gunther (c) vs. Drew McIntyre
I'm curious why they decided to just go back to this after the WrestleMania build, rather than move on to something else. Is it just mostly because they'd have a good match and it will extend Gunther's reign to not have him drop the belt? Is it to get Drew McIntyre on the card without derailing any other plans? In any fashion, as I said, they'll put on a good show, so as long as this doesn't become a thing where they try to have more rematches afterward with no substance to it, I'm down to revisit this once more.
Ronda Rousey vs. Shayna Baszler
Imagine how much better this could have gone down if WWE hadn't screwed up Shayna Baszler from WrestleMania 2020 onward, and if they'd have done the Four Horsewomen vs Four Horsewomen thing, and if Rousey hadn't taken time off, and if she had connected better with the audience, and if this were taking place a couple years ago, and if it were for a championship.
Or, if at least the women's tag titles had been handled better over the past few years to mean something, and then, these two wouldn't have gotten injured right at WrestleMania 39 time, and if the follow-up could have been proper instead of them just having to stall and then rush.
All they did was beat Isla Dawn and Alba Fyre, then immediately break up. This was such a botch.
Baszler needs to win. There's no need in giving the victory to Rousey if she's leaving. Put over Baszler, have her win in a decisive enough way that Shayna looks like a beast coming out of it, and let's get her back on track. She was so good in NXT. Vince messed her up and never corrected that problem.
PREDICTION: Shayna Baszler wins.
SummerSlam Battle Royal
It certainly feels like this was created to give LA Knight a win...which might mean that he WON'T win, just to mess with the crowd. Thankfully, he'll be on the card and they're not making that mistake of leaving him off it like they're seemingly doing with the United States Championship and the tag titles among others. It wouldn't shock me if Grayson Waller were to win, or if they use this to put over another heel who last eliminates LA Knight. However, I'll go with Knight for my predictions just to keep things simple.
Also, generally speaking, battle royals are fun. I'm really glad they're putting this on the card.
PREDICTION: LA Knight wins.
