WWE NXT Great American Bash 2023 Spoilers and Predictions

NXT Championship Match: Carmelo Hayes (c) vs. Ilja Dragunov

I'm curious why they're going in this direction. Hayes feuding with Breakker for an extended period, taking a few detours here and there for someone like Baron Corbin and then coming around to Dragunov again after they've had their encounters before? Seems odd to me. I'd have just gone with the Corbin story here instead of doing it on the television show. Then again, if their priority is to bump the ratings, I guess they thought that would be a better strategy for those numbers rather than trying to get pay-per-view buys. Depending on if that's how they're thinking, it might inform the title situation here even more so than the obvious—as in, I already think Hayes is going to retain, but if they ALSO look at the premium live events as supplemental, then there's even less of a reason to think Dragunov will win the belt.

PREDICTION: Carmelo Hayes retains.

NXT North American Championship Triple Threat Match: "Dirty" Dominik Mysterio (c) (with Rhea Ripley) vs. Wes Lee vs. Mustafa Ali

Depending on who gets the title shot secured (assuming there isn't a Triple Threat), this could go in either direction for a new champion or Lee retaining. I don't see Mysterio holding the North American Championship and competing on a regular basis in NXT, but rather, that he's just been put on there for the time being to get a few reps in and potentially pop a rating with their "utilize main roster talent more" initiative. Ali, though, I do think will win that title and have a run with it. He seems poised to be the next champion based on Lee beating all other comers.

Update: Wes Lee dropped the belt to Dominik Mysterio. I've been out of the loop for these past couple episodes. No idea what's going on. But I'll update this asap with better insight once I can actually do more research, potentially watch those episodes and find out more.

Update #2: Triple Threat now. I'm soooo behind. But I'll just say Mysterio retains. They had to give him the belt for a reason, and I just don't know if that was "to get people talking for a week or so and nothing more" and he'll just drop it soon after. But then again, they did spend so much time setting up this Ali thing. It's weird if they just say screw it after all that.

PREDICTION: Dominik Mysterio retains.

NXT Tag Team Championship Match: Gallus (c) vs. The D'Angelo Family (Channing "Stacks" Lorenzo and Tony D'Angelo)

Was Tony D injured or something? Is that why they dragged it out so long to have this title match when they've been feuding for what feels like 9 months or so? I thought D'Angelo and Stacks were going to win the belts several events ago and they kept just not pulling the trigger, but now, it seems like they HAVE to go in that direction. Gallus just flops as champions. They really only react to their challengers instead of having a title reign on their own. Let's switch things up, put the belts on the more dynamic promo performers and move on.

PREDICTION: Stacks and D'Angelo win the titles.

NXT Women's Championship Submission Match: Tiffany Stratton (c) vs. Thea Hail

A part of me would love to see Thea Hail win the title, if not just for the shock factor of it. I'm also a fan. But I don't think that's likely whatsoever. More so, I bet WWE is just stretching out the Hail feud because there aren't a lot of options for babyfaces to feud with Stratton, so they're stalling. Having this be a submission match at least helps spice it up, rather than just being a generic rematch of what they've already done.

PREDICTION: Tiffany Stratton retains.

Weapons Wild Match: Roxanne Perez vs. Blair Davenport

Does this need to be on the pay-per-view? I don't feel so. But WWE clearly does, so that means it should serve some sort of purpose. Davenport won the first match. Perez winning this makes sense. That will allow them to settle the score with a rubber match on NXT, possibly to determine the new No. 1 contender for the women's title, with Perez likely coming out on top of that. Otherwise, I don't see why this is being given a spot on the card.

Update: So this is Weapons Wild now? Okay. Well, at least that spices it up. Can we call Roxanne up to the main roster already?

PREDICTION: Roxanne Perez wins.

Gable Steveson vs. Baron Corbin

I missed this episode of NXT. I have no context of this match. But I guess they have Corbin working Steveson so that he can be in the ring with someone who is experienced. I'd imagine Steveson wins this unless they are trying to make sure they don't get a situation going with the crowd booing him for winning too much, so if he loses this, he'll lose with Corbin grabbing the ropes or something to prove how "this ain't amateur wrestling, buddy" but we'll all know Gable should've won the match.

PREDICTION: Gable Steveson wins.

(Pre-Show) Eight-Person Mixed Tag Team Match: The Meta-Four vs. Dragon Lee, Nathan Frazer, Yulisa Leon and Valentina Feroz

Uh....sure? This is still going on? I kind of don't see the point in the Heritage Cup existing anymore.

PREDICTION: The Meta-Four wins.
