The following are my predictions for the 2023 WWE NXT Battleground 2023 PPV. Check back for NXT Battleground 2023 results and review coverage here when the time comes.
WWE NXT Battleground 2023 Spoilers and Predictions |
NXT Championship Match: Carmelo Hayes (c) vs. Bron Breakker
It would be really odd if Hayes dropped the belt back to Breakker after all they've done leading up to this point. Breakker is going to put up a fight—especially as the heel going into this—but whether it is via Trick Williams or just a straight-up clean pin, Hayes is going to keep his belt. I'm firmly sure about that.
PREDICTION: Carmelo Hayes retains.
NXT Women's Championship Match: Lyra Valkyria vs. Tiffany Stratton
I can't say this is the match I would have booked. Tiffany Stratton becoming champion is a solid pick (I'd have probably gone with Cora Jade at this particular moment, though), but I don't think Valkyria is the best opponent for her at this show. I'd have gone with a Fatal 4-Way or maybe a Triple Threat with Gigi Dolin and Jacy Jayne or even just Stratton against Roxanne Perez. Valkyria hasn't impressed me enough to justify her being so prominently featured. Then again, when you're up against Double or Nothing and a lot of people aren't going to be tuning in, maybe it's fine to just throw out a sacrificial lamb to put Stratton over and save the other things for feuds that can have some build.
NXT Heritage Cup Match: Noam Dar (c) vs. Dragon Lee
It's still weird to me that WWE spent so many months just entirely ignoring the existence of this title, only to randomly put it on NXT as if it had been there all along. Odd. Since this has immediately turned into Dragon Lee feuding over it, it would be strange if he didn't win the title, wouldn't it? Doesn't that seem like the entire purpose of bringing it back?
NXT North American Championship Triple Threat Match: Wes Lee (c) vs. Joe Gacy vs. Tyler Bate
Something strikes me as Joe Gacy coming out on top of this. I wouldn't make that call if I were in charge, but hey, WWE isn't consulting my opinion. Lee's held this title quite a long time and defended it a lot, so losing now doesn't undo his reign by any means. Bate could win, but wouldn't it just be a lateral move compared to keeping it on Lee, or doing something new with Gacy?
Since Hayes is a babyface champion at the top, I think WWE might look to put this title on a heel with Gacy at the moment to offset that. But Lee overcoming the odds has been his gimmick, and with Gacy getting the better of BOTH Lee and Bate on this go-home episode of NXT, I'm starting to think Lee will just retain for a while longer.
NXT Tag Team Championship Match: Gallus (c) vs. The Creed Brothers
This is just what we saw at Stand & Deliver, but without Tony D'Angelo and Channing "Stacks" Lorenzo, as they've been temporarily written out of the title hunt with D'Angelo being taken in for questioning. As such, the focus is more on them coming back than on The Creed Brothers necessarily winning these belts. That's certainly a possibility, but instead of having a title change just to set up another, I think WWE will have Gallus retain and drop it to Tony and Stacks in the future.
Last Man Standing Match: Dijak vs. Ilja Dragunov
The acting for this whole "I like to inflict pain and you like to receive it" angle has been so bad. These two are really talented in the ring, so I hope they can let that speak for itself instead. At least the brawling stuff has been solid. I want more of that. Give me these two beating each other senseless and you've got me sold. And since the overall theme has been more about Dragunov taking the pain, him winning here is the most logical prediction.
