The WWE Intercontinental Championship has changed hands as Gunther defeated Ricochet to win the title on the June 10, 2022 edition of Friday Night SmackDown.
My immediate reaction: Duh. Ricochet was given the belt in a way that felt very much like WWE was saying "I don't fucking know. Give it to Ricochet or something." He barely had a title reign, as he only feuded with low-tier people in half-assed feuds that didn't even pop up all but sporadically. This was a terrible reign. None of that was his fault, by the way. It was entirely WWE calling those shots. But we've seen a million times before that if a championship isn't on someone they actively are interested in pushing and investing in, it disappears. Ricochet fell off the face of the earth just like Shinsuke Nakamura did. Maybe Gunther will be different, as he's a bigger guy, fresher, and someone they haven't already lost faith in "being more" for the future. I'm hoping we see Gunther fight Drew McIntyre with this belt on the line at WrestleMania.
Since this happened, be sure to check out the updated full list of title changes for this year and the list of current champions and my predictions for who will take the belts away from them.
