The WWE Intercontinental Championship has changed hands as Shinsuke Nakamura defeated Apollo Crews to win the title on the August 13, 2021 edition of Friday Night SmackDown!
My immediate reaction: Wow! I didn't expect a title change here. Not only do I still have it baked into my brain that a television match isn't likely to be a title change, but I also figured Nakamura has enough going for him with the King Nakamura gimmick and Rick Boogs by his side that he didn't need this belt on top of that. Mind you, that's not a complaint, but an observation. I just assumed Crews would retain. Now, I'm curious why the change was made and if this is a good or bad thing for Crews, or if it's more about putting a belt on Nakamura rather than taking it off Crews. Does this factor in the draft at some point? Is it more about having a title change to pop the crowd? Very curious.
Since this happened, be sure to check out the updated full list of title changes for this year and the list of current champions and my predictions for who will take the belts away from them.
