Welcome to another edition of Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat from Smark Out Moment! Each week, we break down the world of professional wrestling and examine two of the polar opposite ends of the spectrum: one thing that was by far the worst thing (Cheap Heat) and the best thing (Cheap Pop) to happen over the past 7 days in sports entertainment. So, what went down this week that we loved and hated about the business?
CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
CRUSHED CORBIN
Is it bad that the story of a miserable man continues to make me happy?
I am, of course, talking about the ongoing narrative for the sad sack that is Baron Corbin. What a weird story it is. Loses his fictional royalty one week, and spirals into a nihlistic mess the next. I have always liked Corbin, but the idea of him being anything close to a face seemed, at one point, as unlikely as Roman Reigns going heel.
The mustard stained shirt, the unshaven apperance, and the zombie like shuffle are not hero qualites, yet, there is something endearing about how pathetic he now is.
I am very intrigued to see where it is going, and, if nothing else, praise must be given for both the originality of the tale, and how Corbin has handled doing a 180 on character development.
CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
CROWD CONTROL
Between the chants for CM Punks and demands for the recently released Bray Wyatt, one wonders if WWE wish that they were back in the Thunderdome?
Indeed, the time away from the fans has done little to change WWE's mind on just going with the flow when it comes to fan reactions, and they are clinging to directing the narrative by drowning out the crowd or editing in their own sound. We must like wrestler X, and dislike wrestler Y because WWE says so.
Embarrassingly, this determination saw a big gaff on the production side recently, with the technical team using an old sound bite that featured a mention of John Cena for crowd noise. Slight teething problem being that John Cena was not even there that night, let alone on-screen!
Whoops.
So there you have it, my two choices for the week. What do YOU think are the Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat this week in professional wrestling? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
