Welcome to another edition of Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat from Smark Out Moment! Each week, we break down the world of professional wrestling and examine two of the polar opposite ends of the spectrum: one thing that was by far the worst thing (Cheap Heat) and the best thing (Cheap Pop) to happen over the past 7 days in sports entertainment. So, what went down this week that we loved and hated about the business?
CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
FINALLY
This past week saw the, long suspected, announcement that The Rock will be returning to WWE at Survivor Series. One can only assume that this will start a set-up for a WrestleMania match with Roman Reigns, and that, if true, is very good news indeed.
The Head of the table story is WWE's most succesful long-term story in years, and, if they can keep it twisting and turning as they have done so far, I would be more than up for it stretching it out till then. A few years ago, a Roman Reigns and Rock match would have made little sense. A hot-shot tactic in which WWE would have had Roman go over in trying to prove he was the guy going forward. Only, we know that crowds would not have accepted it, and it would have done nothing for the cause.
Now? Now Roman is the guy, for real, and the only realistic contender within his extended family would be The Rock. Though, of course, this match is merely wishful thinking at this point.
He might want another 6-second match with a Wyatt family member.
CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
KARRION GETS CROSS
There is no hard and fast rule that a debuting/call up wrestler should win their first match, but it sure helps if you want them perceived as a threat going forward. Clearly, despite being NXT Champion, this is not what WWE wanted for Karrion Kross.
Stripped off all the bells and whistles, not to mention his wife/manager, there was little reason for those unfamiliar with NXT to give two hoots about this new guy. Though, realistically, what chance did he have when he was up against Jeff Hardy on the very same night he brought back his beloved No More Words theme song? Anyone could have had this losing slot, why on earth was it given to Kross?
Possibly the idea is that he will get his revenge by destroying Jeff Hardy next week, thus starting a reputation as someone not to cross, but first impressions do count I am afraid.
A very weird decision.
So there you have it, my two choices for the week. What do YOU think are the Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat this week in professional wrestling? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
