Welcome to another edition of Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat from Smark Out Moment! Each week, we break down the world of professional wrestling and examine two of the polar opposite ends of the spectrum: one thing that was by far the worst thing (Cheap Heat) and the best thing (Cheap Pop) to happen over the past 7 days in sports entertainment. So, what went down this week that we loved and hated about the business?
CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
MEANINGFUL MATCHES ON THE CARDS
Could it possibly be true? Have our dreams come true and prayers been answered? Vince McMahon has reportedly told his team that he no longer wants cold matches shown on television. If true, and not a whim destined to go the way of the wild card and 2-out-of 3 falls matches, this has the potential to be huge.
For those unaware, a cold match is not a weird gimmick match fought in a freezer, but a reference to a match with no rhyme or reason to take place other than to fill time. Or, in other words, eighty percent of Raw. Supposedly, every single match will now fit into a bigger picture, and will not take place unless it is somehow relevant to advancing a story.
So much of Raw has been matches without a purpose, and I am sick of how forgettable and repetitive most of the bouts have become. Yes, we could have done with it years ago, but, if indeed true, better late than never.
CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
A RUSHED CORONATION
There have been hints here and there that have suggested that a new King of the Ring tournament was on the cards, but, if true, what was the point of The Battle for The Crown on SmackDown? Indeed, could this not have been the perfect set-up for the return of the tournament?
Why not have had Adam Pearce getting so fed up of King Corbin and Shinsuke Nakamura's antics that he strips Corbin of the title outright, and demand that he must win a new tournament to claim it back. This would have fit perfectly with the new ethos, surely? That could have been your story line reason for the mid-carders having matches for a few weeks sorted, no?
Why did we squander this on the SmackDown which had a freaking Hell in a Cell match on it? I mean, plus points for packing the show with meaningful matches, but surely there was more to gain, for both fans and wrestlers alike, by having a full-blown tournament and coronation entirely?
So there you have it, my two choices for the week. What do YOU think are the Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat this week in professional wrestling? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
