Welcome to another edition of Triple Threat from Smark Out Moment, where three of us get together to discuss three questions based on one big topic going down in the week of professional wrestling.
This week, Dallas Allsopp, Greg Coleman and Matt Morgan preview Night 1 of WWE WrestleMania 37.
WrestleMania 37 is almost upon us, and just like last year, the event is being split over two nights. This is sure to give more wrestlers an opportunity to shine, without putting such a strain on fans to watch an 8 hour show in one sitting. Will Bianca Belair prove she truly is The EST of WWE? Will Bad Bunny bring new viewers to the show? And who will reign supreme as the WWE Champion?
Question 1: Should Bianca Belair capture the SmackDown Women’s Championship against Sasha Banks? Will the quality of their match make up for the poor booking so far?
ALLSOPP: Bianca Belair should absolutely walk out of WrestleMania as SmackDown Women’s Champion. She is a breath of fresh air on the blue brand, and she can certainly elevate the women she competes against. For all the failings surrounding the booking of the feud between Belair and Sasha Banks, they are most certainly capable of magic in the ring. I fully expect them to put on one of the matches of the night, allowing fans to forget how bad their feud has been.
COLEMAN: Bianca Belair should beat Sasha Banks for the SmackDown Women’s Championship at WrestleMania. Belair beating the best women’s wrestler in the world, and one of the best wrestlers in the world period, would be a huge for her legacy and legitimacy as a top star. I believe these two have the potential to have one of the best matches at WrestleMania, and I believe they will deliver. This should be Sting vs Ric Flair at The Great American Bash, when Sting officially arrived by winning his first NWA World Championship.
MORGAN: I hope Bianca Belair wins at WrestleMania. Sasha Banks’ legitimacy as a performer has never been in question due to a loss, and this match would not be an exception. There would be no better way to establish Belair as one of the company’s major stars than for her to win the championship from Banks at the biggest show of the year. I also have no doubt that these two will put on an amazing match, which should hopefully make up for the lackluster booking that has taken place during the last month and a half.
Question 2: Will Bad Bunny bring more eyes to the show? Considering his work since the Royal Rumble, does he deserve to beat The Miz?
COLEMAN: I would imagine the Latin community might have an interest in seeing one of their biggest stars wrestle The Miz, but I can’t imagine the uptick in views as a result of Bad Bunny being on the card will be significant. If this was a Tag Team match with The Miz and John Morrison vs Damian Priest and Bad Bunny, I would be ok with Bad Bunny getting the win. In a one-on-one match, I think the best finish would be The Miz cheating to win in order to set up another match. I wouldn’t be mad if Bad Bunny won, and the fact that he seems to take this seriously means he deserves the win, if he indeed gets it.
MORGAN: I honestly don’t know if Bad Bunny’s appearance would bring more attention to WrestleMania. Even though Bad Bunny is a star, I’m not sure his fans would be interested in seeing him participate in a professional wrestling match. I see no harm in Bad Bunny beating The Miz. Bad Bunny has been appearing consistently since the Royal Rumble, which is more effort than a lot of other celebrities have made in the past (not that it’s necessarily the fault of celebrities who have been brought in). I hope that with The Miz’s help, Bad Bunny and The Miz have an entertaining match at WrestleMania.
ALLSOPP: I hope Bad Bunny does bring more eyes to the product, even if it is just casual fans that tune in. He was a name I was already aware of, so it is great to see him appear pretty much every week. The commitment he has shown has been impressive, therefore I feel that WWE should reward his contributions with a victory over The Miz. It doesn’t have to be clean, but yes, I think he truly deserves to pick up the win.
Question 3: Bobby Lashley vs Drew McIntyre will be a battle of the behemoths. Who walks out of WrestleMania 37 as WWE Champion? Will they keep the belt for most of 2021?
MORGAN: I predict that Bobby Lashley retains at WrestleMania. Drew McIntyre has been in the spotlight for pretty much the whole year. McIntyre has worked so hard during the pandemic, and he deserves all of the praise and attention that he’s received. Now that McIntyre has gotten the chance to be in the limelight, I want to see Lashley have that same chance. Seeing Lashley have a long lasting reign would be refreshing to see. He has been super impressive, and I believe that he would make a great WWE Champion going forward.
ALLSOPP: I’m struggling to predict a winner for this match, as both men deserve to be the pinnacle of WWE at the moment. The WWE Championship has been thoroughly rehabilitated by Drew McIntyre’s two reigns, and I have no doubt that Bobby Lashley will achieve the same. But in order to achieve this, Lashley needs a long reign of his own, therefore I believe he will win. It would make sense for his reign to be truly ‘Almighty’ and last for the rest of 2021, and I hope this is the decision WWE makes.
COLEMAN: Before Raw, my heart said Bobby Lashley would win, but my head said Drew McIntyre would get his title winning WrestleMania moment that he didn’t get last year in front of fans. After Raw and seeing The Hurt Business break up, in addition to the bounty Lashley has placed on McIntyre, it makes me wonder if these two will even have a one-on-one match. I’m going to predict that Lashley will leave WrestleMania as WWE Champion, holding the belt until SummerSlam.
Those are our thoughts on the issue, but where do you stand?
