Welcome to another edition of Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat from Smark Out Moment! Each week, we break down the world of professional wrestling and examine two of the polar opposite ends of the spectrum: one thing that was by far the worst thing (Cheap Heat) and the best thing (Cheap Pop) to happen over the past 7 days in sports entertainment. So, what went down this week that we loved and hated about the business?
CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
A STYLISH CLASH
I touched briefly upon this last week as a by-product of my heat column, but, after watching the exchange between AJ Styles, Omos, and The New Day on Raw, I really must give them their deserved column inches.
I am so looking forward to their WrestleMania match!
Getting to see Omos in action for the first time is exciting enough, but the build itself is so entertaining. AJ Styles exchange with The New Day over how well he actually knew Omos really had me laughing, and was a great example of playing to everyone's strength. AJ is a master at playing a dumb hick heel, but never to the extent that he turns into a joke himself, as his ring work will always cancel out any thoughts that he should not be taken seriously.
Next we come to Omos, who is obviously still learning, but his delivery and mannerisms complimented the segment well, and makes for such a wonderful contrast to Styles.
Lastly, The New Day, who, shockingly, have been together since 2015, yet still manage to bring fresh microphone gold.
Top marks to all involved in this one.
CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
A FLAWED FEUD
Remember when WWE had Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn face off for the very last time, with the big draw being that they would never clash again? Well, do not worry if you cannot, as it is not like they do either.
In all seriousness, we all knew that such a stipulation was as water tight as your average wrestling retirement, but I guess that I expected the build or the stakes to be higher. Maybe when Owens finally wins a 2nd Universal Championship? Not over Kevin being annoyed that Sami thinks that there is a conspiracy against him.
Sami accepting Owen's challenge felt oddly flat, and rushed, and this is despite us having some sort of build happening a few weeks earlier, but all the background work feels so insignificant, it barely feels that it counts.
I know that these two will have a great match on a technical basis, but I cannot say that I feel much emotional investment in who I want to win.
Plus, do not get me started about Logan Paul being involved....
So there you have it, my two choices for the week. What do YOU think are the Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat this week in professional wrestling? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
