Welcome to another edition of Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat from Smark Out Moment! Each week, we break down the world of professional wrestling and examine two of the polar opposite ends of the spectrum: one thing that was by far the worst thing (Cheap Heat) and the best thing (Cheap Pop) to happen over the past 7 days in sports entertainment. So, what went down this week that we loved and hated about the business?
CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
TRI-AGAIN
The WWE Women's Tag Team Championship is, encase you had forgotten, a tri-branded title. The original idea behind it was that the champions could travel and defend it on any of the brands.
Undeniably, this was seen as a good move, as three sets of titles would have been overkill.
Well, that was the theory anyway.
The reality is that they are largely dual-branded, with NXT getting a sniff once every blue moon. However, this past week saw WWE remember that this rule exists, and promptly sent Nia Jax and Shayna Bazler over to confront the Dusty Cup Classic winners, Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzalez.
More like this, please!
Given how WWE have taken to lumping single stars together with no rhyme or reason is why going hard on the tri-brand idea is exactly what the titles need to mix things up a little, and really keep the matches fresh. Plus, having travelling champs has a cool old school territory feel to it too.
I know that is a little harder to do in the pandemic era, but, at least it has not been forgotten, and hopefully this little exchange will be a sign of things to come.
CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
NOT COOL
Bit of unfortunate news this week with the revelation that Carlito is, once again, done with WWE.
His return at the Royal Rumble was long overdue, with his only appearances since his 2010 release being at his father's Hall of Fame induction, and an appearance in a sketch for the second season of The Edge and Christian Show.
Of course, a Royal Rumble return should never be a given that anyone is back for good, but competing the next night on Raw and going on Corey Grave's podcast did lead many to think that he had signed a new deal.
Sadly, this was not the case, and that was indeed the extent of his obligations. A shame. The guy looks great, moves well, and is still clearly held high in fan's regard. Still, maybe something could be worked out in the near future?
So there you have it, my two choices for the week. What do YOU think are the Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat this week in professional wrestling? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
