Women's Wrestling Weekly Recap & Review #312

Posted by Dallas Allsopp Monday, January 4, 2021

Welcome to another edition of WOMEN'S WRESTLING WEEKLY—a rundown of the events which have transpired in the world of women's professional wrestling over the past several days not just with the Superstars on WWE programming, but with Impact Wrestling's Knockouts, ROH's Women of Honor, and even a glimpse at the women on the independent circuit.

WWE Monday Night Raw

Dana Brooke vs Shayna Baszler

This was simply a vehicle to get Shayna Baszler over as a badass, which is fair enough considering how low her stock fell as a singles competitor on the main roster.

A Kirifuda Clutch was enough to wrap up the submission victory for Baszler, and hopefully this leads to a decent tilt at the Royal Rumble.

Winner: Shayna Baszler

Rating: 2/5

Charlotte Flair vs Nia Jax

Despite the fact this should have been a heated match, it felt very lifeless. Charlotte Flair in second gear is still better than most women in fifth gear, however Nia Jax just was not able to positively contribute to this match.

A pointless disqualification initiated by Shayna Baszler gave Flair the victory, but jeez, I was not amused.

Winner: Charlotte Flair (via DQ)

Rating: 2/5

Impact Wrestling

There were no women's matches this week.

AEW Dark

Lindsay Snow vs Penelope Ford

As always, this was a quick match that highlighted how strong Penelope Ford is at ring psychology, if not wrestling. A Cutter was enough to secure her the pinfall victory.

Winner: Penelope Ford

Rating: 2/5

Anna Jay vs Jazmin Allure

Anna Jay started off her week with a quick and reasonable victory over Jazmin Allure, making her submit to a Queen Slayer. This was the perfect preparation for her match on Dynamite the next night.

Winner: Anna Jay

Rating: 2/5

Leva Bates vs Madi Wrenkowski

Maxi Wrenkowski built on her strong performance last week to show once again that she is a talent. Leva Bates may have won with a Small Package, but it was Wrenkowski who was in the minds of fans.

Winner: Leva Bates

Rating: 2/5

Tay Conti vs Vertvixen

A TCO from Tay Conti was the exclamation point that this match needed. Vertvixen looked solid, but this was all about Conti.

Winner: Tay Conti

Rating: 2.5/5

AEW Wednesday Night Dynamite

Anna Jay & Tay Conti vs Britt Baker & Penelope Ford

Anna Jay and Tay Conti excelled here as the face team, showing up Britt Baker and Penelope Ford. The emotion was visible on Jay’s face throughout, and if anything, that made me more invested in the contest.

Jay secured the victory with a Sleeper Hold, and it was a thoroughly deserved victory at that. She and Conti looked strong, and most importantly, she did Brodie Lee proud.

Winner: Anna Jay & Tay Conti

Rating: 3/5

WWE NXT

Mercedes Martinez vs Valentina Feroz

How do you effectively re-establish Mercedes Martinez as a threat? You have her destroy Valentina Feroz. This was effective and extremely entertaining.

Winner: Mercedes Martinez

Rating: 2/5

WWE NXT UK

There were no women's matches this week.

WWE Friday Night SmackDown

The Riott Squad vs Natalya & Tamina

Natalya seemingly replaced Billie Kay here, but the story of the match was about Kay’s apparent alliance with The Riott Squad. It may be a one time thing, but even that failed to elevate the quality of the match. All in all, this was poor, with Liv Morgan pinning Tamina with a roll up.

Winner: The Riott Squad

Rating: 2/5

Sasha Banks & Bianca Belair vs Bayley & Carmella

This was a much better match, with all four women working hard to perform. Carmella once again proved there is more to her character than just glitz and glam, whilst Bianca Belair continued to proved why she is the EST of WWE.

Carmella stole the victory with a Face Buster, pinning Sasha Banks to continue their feud. This was a fun match that served many purposes well.

Winner: Bayley & Carmella

Rating: 3/5

MATCH OF THE WEEK:

Anna Jay & Tay Conti vs Britt Baker & Penelope Ford

This was a great match to have on such a stacked tribute show for Brodie Lee. He would have been so proud of Anna Jay's performance.

WOMAN OF THE WEEK:

Anna Jay

Two big victories this week mean Anna Jay is slowly gathering momentum in AEW's women's division.

So there you have it, the breakdown for the week in women's wrestling. What were some of your favorite and least favorite moments from these women? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
