Welcome to another edition of Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat from Smark Out Moment! Each week, we break down the world of professional wrestling and examine two of the polar opposite ends of the spectrum: one thing that was by far the worst thing (Cheap Heat) and the best thing (Cheap Pop) to happen over the past 7 days in sports entertainment. So, what went down this week that we loved and hated about the business?
CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
REAL TALK
Wow. For the first time in almost a whole year, WWE actually acknowledged the pandemic.
On one hand, that they wanted to craft a show of escapism is admirable, but a bit silly when one only had to take a look at the non-existent crowd to be reminded of this. Occasionally, wrestlers would make alludes to it being a bad or crazy year, but nobody would ever call it by name.
Drew McIntyre catching it is not a good thing, but, thankfully, he has proven asymptomatic, and not suffering from any adverse effects. Him addressing that it was real was the responsible thing to do, and there was something refreshing about the honesty of WWE doing this.
Well done, WWE. A good call, and something that fans can appreciate.
CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
LOST WITHOUT YOU
What was the point of breaking up the IIconics again?
Naively, I used to think that it was so Peyton Royce could have a singles push, but that cannot possibly be right, surely? Meanwhile, over on SmackDown, Billie Kay is not faring all that much better.
Essentially, she gives out resumes in the hope of finding a new place, flip-flops between clients mid-match as a self-appointed manager, and, that is about it. She is looking for a purpose, but she already had a great one that had yet to feel stale.
Maybe WWE have a grand plan for where this is all going, but, I am sorry to have to say that I suspect her indecisive nature is actually just the embodiment of the creative's team ideas for her....
So there you have it, my two choices for the week. What do YOU think are the Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat this week in professional wrestling? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
