Welcome to another edition of Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat from Smark Out Moment! Each week, we break down the world of professional wrestling and examine two of the polar opposite ends of the spectrum: one thing that was by far the worst thing (Cheap Heat) and the best thing (Cheap Pop) to happen over the past 7 days in sports entertainment. So, what went down this week that we loved and hated about the business?
CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
ONE LAST TEAM UP
While I worry about will happen to Tucker now that Heavy Machinery is no more, I did enjoy the nonsense that gave the team one last hurrah before bowing out for good.
Otis donning a luchadore costume to pose as El Gran Gordo so that he could team with Tucker was a well executed piece of fun.
Shades of Mr. America combined with the Los Conquistadores angle made this just tick the right boxes for me. Nobody was fooled for a second, and neither were we meant to be. The joy came from The Miz and John Morrison's incredulous reactions to the absurdity, and just watching this hefty luchadore throw them about.
Oh, and they really did not need to include it, but Lucha House Party coming out and acknowledging Gordo as one of them was a great bit of attention to detail.
Much like The New Day, I hope that this is not the very last we have seen of the team.
Bonus Pop: I was happy to see the return of the ol' twin magic on SmackDown. An effective use of a trick that we have not seen used for a while. It fooled me at any rate!
CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
NOT AN IICONIC START
Am I imagining things? I thought that the point behind breaking up The IIconics was to push Peyton Royce as a singles star? There was clearly no other good reason for it.
Yet, just a few weeks removed from their rushed split, Royce might just be in a new team with Lacey Evans! If it were Billie Kay I would understand, as what else is there for her to do if she is not seen as a title contender, but Royce?
Having the IIconics apart is baffling if this is the direction that they are going. What is the connection or story reason for her pairing with Evans? Did they suddenly realize that they needed more teams following Natalya and Lana’s parting?
While it is true that they do, why select the earmarked singles star? Any chemistry that they do have is unlikely to be on par with what she had with her literal childhood friend anyway.
Of course, there is every chance that this was just a random one-off tag match, but there was something about the presentation that did not make me feel that Royce was forging her own way now.
So, a pointless new team? Or just a weird way to push their new golden girl?
Hopefully next week will provide some answers…..
So there you have it, my two choices for the week. What do YOU think are the Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat this week in professional wrestling? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
