WEDNESDAY NIGHT WAR:
AEW DYNAMITE vs. NXT
FACTOR 1: MATCHES
AEW = Every match this week on Dynamite was a hit, however the pick of the bunch was Adam Page and Dustin Rhodes defeating Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara. The bout was exciting and entertaining, which is exactly what we have come to expect from Dynamite main events.
Death Triangle defeated Joey Janela and Private Party in another quality match, which allowed Death Triangle to gain instant credibility. Death Triangle are a collection of some of the best wrestlers in AEW, so it is exciting to see how they will impose themselves within the company.
NXT = The match quality was much improved this week, with multiple strong matches taking place. Dakota Kai vs Mia Yim was better than it had any right to be, whilst Keith Lee successfully defended his NXT North American Championship against Cameron Grimes in a fun match.
The highlight of the night was The Broserweights successfully defending their NXT Tag Team Championship against The Undisputed Era. This match signalled a true passing of the torch within NXT, and the contest was exciting from the first moment.
WINNER: AEW
FACTOR 2: PROMOS
AEW = Christopher Daniels mocked the infomercials from the Dark Order, which was a rather entertaining segment. It did however continue to hint that Daniels may have more to do with Dark Order than meets the eye.
NXT = There was a creepy vignette shown again during the show, which possibly hints at Killer Kross making his debut. It was suitably intriguing, and hopefully this leads to some strong television time.
Tyler Breeze was interviewed about the Performance Center, which allowed him to display a passion we so rarely see with his character.
WINNER: NXT
FACTOR 3: STORYLINES
AEW = The reveal of The Exalted One was hinted at again this week, and I will admit that this has been more exciting than I initially believed it would be.
Jon Moxley continued his feud with Jake Hager, noting he is angry and hurt, which is a combination that will not suit Hager. Moxley looked passionate here, and it is the strength of his promos and in ring work that will carry this feud.
NXT = Charlotte Flair arrived to exact her revenge on Rhea Ripley, which she achieved in destructive fashion. Flair continues to look strong, whilst also providing a sense of legitimacy to Ripley, NXT and the NXT Women’s Championship.
The feud between Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano reached fever pitch, with both wrestlers now united in their absolute hatred of each other. It is clear there is much more to come from their violent interactions, and it will be compelling to see who will come out on top.
WINNER: AEW
FACTOR 4: SCHEDULING / PACING
AEW = Dynamite was once again a thrilling show. The matches were superb, and the presentation continues to improve each week.
NXT = NXT was a great watch, however a few decisions led to it falling in quality.
WINNER: AEW
EXTRA CREDIT BONUS ROUND!!!
AEW gains points for making Death Triangle look strong on their debut. This is a team that should dominate AEW in 2020.
AEW loses no points for being a consistently entertaining show. Dynamite is currently a freight train showing no signs of stopping.
NXT gains points for KUSHIDA returning to winning ways. He is a star, but needs to be better utilised in NXT.
NXT also gains points for the intrigue surrounding Raul Mendoza being kidnapped. Booked correctly, this could be a great storyline.
NXT loses points for having Dakota Kai lose to Mia Yim, as she would have been a much better option in the women’s number one contender match.
POINT ADJUSTMENTS: AEW (+1 / -0) / NXT (+2 / -1)
THIS WEEK'S WINNER = AEW
With a score of 4 to 2, AEW wins this week’s Wednesday Night War. Dynamite continues to be a successful and consistent show, whilst NXT was much improved this week.
That's my pick for the better show of the week, but how do YOU stand?
