CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
GETTING THE JOB DUNNE
My favourite bit of NXT continues to be everything involving The Broserweights, and this past week was no exception. Their tag title defence against The Undisputed Era was a fantastic match, and that their reign looks set to continue is great news.
While the odd couple trope is about as new to wrestling as the villainous foreigner, there is something extra special about this pairing that just ticks all the right boxes. They match each other as exceptional brawlers and technicians, but are polar opposite when it comes to attitude and outlook. Pete Dunne stone walls everything Riddle does or says, and looks like he thinks everything is ridiculous, but goes along with it anyway. His indifference to Riddle’s oblivious nature is impossible to dislike.
I loved their road trip to Portland sketches a while back, and feel that NXT would do well to incorporate more like it. They have the insanely good wrestling and intense builds down pat, but the likes of the Broserweights fill a sweet spot that, for me, was a bit lacking on the yellow brand.
Just do not let Pete catch you laughing too hard…
CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
PET PEEVE
PET PEEVE
This past week saw Drew McIntyre crush not only Rowan’s robotic spider, but also any hope of a meaningful resolution to this long running angle. My problem is not so much that the adventures of Rowan and Spider are, presumably, never to continue, but that it is another clear case of WWE building something up without having an ending in mind. Once again, they leave a wrestler to work their way out of a failure that was not their own.
Yes, it was dumb, but dumber things have prevailed in the world of wrestling. If they wanted to, they could have thought of a workaround, such as that not being the real pet contained in the cage, and it was a joke on Rowan’s part. That would give them a week to come up with a better idea. Instead, they saw the reaction, or lack of, and squashed it.
Though, maybe expecting them to fix it in a week is too generous. After all, it did take months to get what we did….
So there you have it, my two choices for the week. What do YOU think are the Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat this week in professional wrestling? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
