CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
DREW LAUGHINTYRE
AEW might have had Jack Whitehall, the popular UK comedian, on their opening show, but, and I say this a fan of Whitehall, who needs him when WWE have got their very own resident funny man in Drew McIntyre.
Of course, the differences between him and a regular comedian are stark. There is no observation humor, puns, or impressions, but it does not make him any less entertaining.
Changing from no-nonsense killer to a jovial ass kicker has done wonders for his fan reception, and it is not like he was an unpopular figure before. The now far less sullen Drew still relishes in doling out the punishment, but there is something wonderfully amusing about how he now bays to the crowd, involves them with his new countdown to the Claymore, and just revels in combining clowning with clobbering.
It truly is baffling that he has not yet had a world title shot, and while I doubt that his time will come anywhere this side of WrestleMania, his ever-increasing popularity must surely stand him in good stead somewhere down the line.
CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
ROBE RAGE
ROBE RAGE
It was nice to see Sarah Logan on TV, but I am not confidant that WWE have all that much for her going forward. Getting decimated by Charlotte Flair is a fairly standard fare for the majority of the female roster, but this felt like it was done a little more decisively than usual.
In addition, I am not sure that they did her any favors by having her attack Charlotte Flair’s robe. It looked plain bizarre, and not in a way that marks her out as a crazy dangerous woman to fear. While it could be argued that the attack was a clever mind game, and represented a deeper attack against the Flair legacy, I would counter that any such notion was lost in how silly it looked.
Of course, there is a possibility that this sets up something bigger further down the line between the pair. Though, I have a feeling that anyone not named Flair, Lynch, Asuka, or Rowsey are of little concern to WWE now that we are on the road to WrestleMania. As such, if they have nothing else, why not add her to the Viking Raiders? After all, she already dresses in a way that is Viking inspired, her husband is there, and she even lives a real life Viking inspired lifestyle.
Though, as shown by them passing on having Sonya Deville in a LGBT storyline, perhaps it is wistful thinking to expect WWE to cast to type…
