CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
GOLDBERG'S BACK
Regular readers of this column will know that The Miz is my favourite wrestler on the current roster, but even I was only mildly excited for the SummerSlam match between him and Dolph Ziggler. Would it have been a good match? Yes, if their lengthy Intercontinental title feud a few years is anything to go by, but repeating the feud minus the title and Maryse made it a feel like a watered down rehash. Plus, we already had the SummerSlam repeat feuds sorted with the likes of Brock/Seth and Orton/Kofi.
Thankfully, WWE seemed to think so too, and decided to mix things up by having Goldberg take the place of The Miz curtsey of a contract switcheroo. After The Undertaker got his wind back at Extreme rules, it felt only right that Goldberg should get a chance to do the same. Not that either has anything to prove, as their legacy in this industry has more than been cemented, but this provides the added bonus of being a fresh never seen match up. These are hard to do in WWE these days, and big shows like SummerSlam benefit from having them on the card.
It need not be anything too elaborate either. Just have Dolph Ziggler selling the hell out of the classic Goldberg moves for five minutes, and then we can all go home happy.
CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
WARRIOR WORRIES
WARRIOR WORRIES
Kari Sane had a brilliant thing going with her pirate themed gimmick, but had being the operative word here. I am not quite sure how WWE managed to botch the pairing of Kari and Asuka, but botch they have. Of course, the rot had set in a while back, but the past week’s fatal four-way for the Women’s Tag Team titles cemented it. While I am very pleased that Bliss and Cross have the titles, the story being built, off and on, was that the Kabuki Warriors were the ones chasing these titles, and that Bliss and Cross’ friendship was not long for this world. So, what happened?
Between a mismatched lazy entrance theme, the ill-fitting inclusion of Paige as a manager, and rarely featuring on TV, perhaps it is not too hard to see why the team did not set the world on fire as it should have. Oh, and to add insult to injury? The twitter handle given for Asuka on the Raw was Io Shirai’s....
They are not even on the same brand, but I guess that both being Japanese was enough to get them confused...
Says it all really.
