Women's Wrestling Weekly Recap & Review #237

Posted by Dallas Allsopp Saturday, July 27, 2019
Welcome to another edition of WOMEN'S WRESTLING WEEKLY—a rundown of the events which have transpired in the world of women's professional wrestling over the past several days not just with the Superstars on WWE programming, but with Impact Wrestling's Knockouts, ROH's Women of Honor, and even a glimpse at the women on the independent circuit.

WWE Monday Night Raw

Unfortunately, there were no official women's matches this week. However, former female wrestlers got involved in the 24/7 Championship shenanigans which was an entertaining part of Raw reunion, especially with the antics of Madusa.

WWE SmackDown Live

Charlotte vs Ember Moon

This match was a disappointment considering the women involved, however this was an angle to give Ember Moon some credibility. Whether or not you win clean against Charlotte, that victory is worth a lot more than a victory over most other women on the roster. The more important aspect to this match was the post match interactions, with Moon delivering an eclipse to both Bayley and Charlotte, which sets her up well for the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship match at SummerSlam.

Winner:Ember Moon
Rating: 1/5

WWE NXT UK

Kay Lee Ray, Jinny & Jazzy Gabert vs Toni Storm, Piper Niven & Xia Brookside

This was a fun little match, with everyone involved looking good. Toni Storm is the current NXT UK Women's Champion, and as such the overall storyline of this match was Kay Lee Ray avoiding Storm where possible. During the match, it was Storm and Piper Niven who showed the most talent, with Storm hitting a suicide dive and Niven controlling the match in general.

The finish came when Jazzy Gabert tripped up Xia Brookside on the turnbuckle, which allowed Jinny to hit her with a facebuster for the pinfall. This match managed to not only show that Ray is avoiding Storm, but allowed all 6 women to look strong.

Winners: Kay Lee Ray, Jinny & Jazzy Gabert
Rating: 3/5

WWE NXT

Bianca Belair vs Xia Li

Bianca Belair started the match on the attack and dominated throughout. Belair followed up a back handspring moonsault with a fall away slam to drive home how she was in charge. Xia Li had a brief comeback with a series of kicks, only to be pinned following a KOD. This match allowed Belair to demonstrate how dangerous she can be, which is great because her stock has fallen over the past year. A few more victories like this will put her back in contention for the NXT Women's Championship.

Winner: Bianca Belair
Rating: 2/5

Io Shirai vs Kacy Catanzaro

Io Shirai came out strong with a dropkick and running knees, before following up with a backbreaker. However, we were denied a great match due to Candice LeRae interfering to attack Shirai. This was extremely disappointing as I was eagerly anticipating this match, however it does further their feud and potentially set up a match between them at TakeOver: Toronto II.

Winner: Io Shirai via DQ
Rating: 0.5/5

WWE Main Event

Naomi vs Sarah Logan

Naomi started the match with a series of counters, taking control of the match with knee strikes and a sunset flip. Sarah Logan responded with a pop up headbutt and a dropkick to the floor, before choking Naomi with the ropes and following that up with a fallaway slam. Logan continued to assert herself on the match with an inverted cloverleaf, however Naomi escaped and managed to hit the disaster kick. Naomi eventually managed to get Logan down long enough to pin her following a split legged moonsault.

This match was good considering it was on Main Event, however like many Sarah Logan matches, it felt lacking. Logan is showing slow improvement in the ring, so keeping her on Main Event will help to make her a better wrestler. I cannot help but think Naomi deserves better, but with the women's divisions on both sides of the roster full to bursting point, using her to help improve her fellow wrestlers is the perfect job for Naomi.

Winner: Naomi
Rating: 2/5

Impact Wrestling

Jordynne Grace vs Kiera Hogan

Madison Rayne was on commentary for this match which was an interesting sub plot. Kiera Hogan attempts to take control of the match early with a suicide dive, but she is caught by Jordynne Grace, however Hogan manages to connect with a suicide dive at the second time of asking. Hogan chokes out Grace in the corner, however Grace manages to counter a monkey flip into a sitout powerbomb to take control. The finish of the match sees Hogan hitting a superkick on Grace who falls to the floor, with Grace taking Hogan out with an electric chair drop on the floor. Rayne decides it would be an opportune moment to interfere as she rolls Hogan back into the ring, and Grace cradles Hogan for the three count.

This was an interesting match that continued to develop the ongoing issues between all three women. Impact Wrestling has been on a roll as of late with strong knockouts action, and this match did not disappoint. The potential triple threat match between all 3 women is a tantalising prospect, and would be a candidate for the best knockouts match of the year if they were given enough time.

Winner: Jordynne Grace
Rating: 3/5

MATCH OF THE WEEK:
Kay Lee Ray, Jinny & Jazzy Gabert vs Toni Storm, Piper Niven & Xia Brookside

This match was the perfect example of why fans should watch NXT UK. The quality of the wrestling is great, and the storylines that are woven into the match are also captivating. Toni Storm is a strong NXT UK Women's Champion, whilst the other women are fine examples of the talent on offer in the UK.

WOMAN OF THE WEEK:
Bianca Belair

Bianca Belair reminded fans just how dominant she can be this week, and her swift disposal of Xia Li was enough to make quite the impression. Yes, she will need more performances like this one to become a credible threat to the NXT Women's Championship, but Belair is more than capable of achieving this over the next few months.

So there you have it, the breakdown for the week in women's wrestling. What were some of your favorite and least favorite moments from these women? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
