Cheap Pop & Cheap Heat of the Week in Wrestling #271

Posted by Ross K. Foad Friday, July 12, 2019
Welcome to another edition of Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat from Smark Out Moment! Each week, we break down the world of professional wrestling and examine two of the polar opposite ends of the spectrum: one thing that was by far the worst thing (Cheap Heat) and the best thing (Cheap Pop) to happen over the past 7 days in sports entertainment. So, what went down this week that we loved and hated about the business?

CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
THE REAL KEVIN OWENS SHOW

Just weeks after expressing an interest in going face on her Lillian Garcia's Chasing Glory podcast, Kevin Owens did exactly that on the most recent edition of SmackDown Live. Was that pre-planned? Maybe, but given how candid he was throughout the rest of the podcast, I would not like to say for certain. Nevertheless, he has turned, and has somehow done it without changing much about his actual character.

Having him brawling in the parking lot, sounding off against Shane O' Mac, and thwarting security guards? This was the real definition of a Kevin Owens show, not having him stand in a ring holding a mic for others. This is a far better use of him, and a promising prospect for both SmackDown Live and Kevin.

His comeback in February was without true cause or focus, but this actually feels like they have a longer term idea for him. Is he going to the be one to stop Shane's reign of terror? I would have thought that Roman and The Undertaker were going to be the ones to do this, but it shows a tremendous amount of faith if WWE wants him to be the one to do so.

Heel or face, I like Kevin Owens a great deal, and seeing and hearing more from him can only ever be a good thing.

CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
YOU WIN YOU LOSE

What on earth was the point of that Raw intergender elimination tag match? Ok, I get that WWE want to build the team of Becky Lynch and Seth Rollins for Extreme Rules, but the logistics of this one were nonsensical, even for wrestling.

Eliminating an opponent does not give either side an advantage, because both the victor and the loser has to then leave. So, why bother with the format?

Was this done just to try something a bit different? Even if it was a little contrived, I still applaud them for trying something new. However, I have a sneaky suspicion that it was just another example of WWE's new policy of fitting all wrestling around the ad breaks which, as I discussed last week, does not always serve the show's best interest.

So there you have it, my two choices for the week. What do YOU think are the Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat this week in professional wrestling? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
