Cheap Pop & Cheap Heat of the Week in Wrestling #253

Posted by Ross K. Foad Friday, March 8, 2019
Welcome to another edition of Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat from Smark Out Moment! Each week, we break down the world of professional wrestling and examine two of the polar opposite ends of the spectrum: one thing that was by far the worst thing (Cheap Heat) and the best thing (Cheap Pop) to happen over the past 7 days in sports entertainment. So, what went down this week that we loved and hated about the business?

CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
SAMERICA JOE

While I do feel that it is a shame that R-Truth's United States title reign did not go on longer, there is much to be said about what has risen in its place.

Try as WWE might to have presented the United States title as equal to the Intercontinental, few would argue that its place has always teetered somewhere closer to a tertiary title than a secondary. Even strapping it to former WWE champions such as Roman Reigns and Randy Orton never quite gave it the rub that it should have.

However, in one fell Senton Bomb, I feel that the momentum has shifted, and Samoa Joe is going to make this a title worth caring and vying for.

Just look at the scene emerging with the likes of potential bouts against the likes of Rey Mysterio and Andrade. It would be very hard to not do right by the title with the current caliber chasing the gold.

Plus, potential revival of the division aside, it feels good to see Joe finally getting his due and get a main roster title. Can Joe be to the US title what The Miz was to the intercontinental? I have a very good feeling that he can.

CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
So Not Laughing

Maybe the appearance of the two Saturday Night Live cast members on Monday Night Raw was better received by American audiences, but the general consensus of the British fan was one of confusion.

While not the worst thing that I ever seen, it was awkward. Neither really came across as current fans of the product, and it was telling that this was more contractual obligation than a genuine thrill for the pair. Also, having them ask if wrestling was fake? What is WWE's current obsession with smashing the last remnants we have of kayfabe? There is a way to do it tact and humor, but this leapfrogged right over it.

Now, one and done was bad enough, but this cringe fest of an appearance came with the news that they would also be involved with WrestleMania 35! Why? Hopefully this will be a very limited capacity akin to Hulk Hogan doing a (botched) introduction and little more…
