Cheap Pop & Cheap Heat of the Week in Wrestling #234

Posted by Ross K. Foad Friday, October 26, 2018
Welcome to another edition of Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat from Smark Out Moment! Each week, we break down the world of professional wrestling and examine two of the polar opposite ends of the spectrum: one thing that was by far the worst thing (Cheap Heat) and the best thing (Cheap Pop) to happen over the past 7 days in sports entertainment. So, what went down this week that we loved and hated about the business?

CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
HEEL AMBROSE

Dean Ambrose turning heel is a prime example of bittersweet. It was heartbreaking, callous, and absolutely the right time to have done it.

Firstly, we did not see it coming. Sure, we did weeks ago when WWE were very clearly telegraphing dissension, but after the announcement by Reigns, and winning the tag titles, I figured that there was no way a turn could be in the cards now, surely?

How wrong I was.

Rollins needed Ambrose more than ever, but no, Dean turns heel to give him the maximum heel heat from the crowd. Could we have truly hated Dean if he had done this last week? It would have been no way near as impactful.

In addition, Dean does not have to worry about Roman aiding Seth or having to battle two people by himself. Rollins is isolated, so it is the perfect time.

Lastly, this tag belt situation makes it even more intriguing. Where do we go from here? Will they drop them back to Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler next week? Maybe Seth Rollins will pick up the slack and start defending them in handicap matches?

I only wish that the situation that brought us here was not so sad....

CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
REIGNS RELINQUISHES TITLE

Nothing in the world of wrestling could be sadder this week than the announcement Roman Reigns had to make.

I have listened to a few podcast interviews with Reigns, but not once did he bring up his earlier battle with the disease. It says a lot about him as a human that he never before wanted anyone to know about it, and not once had ever looked for sympathy for it. It must have taken a great deal of courage to address so many millions of people across the world and have it broadcast loud and clear.

This moment was humbling, poignant, and made everyone who hated on him sit up and realize the man behind the character was not as invincible as his booking might suggest. Here was a man with a real name, family, and genuine love for the business and all those who were part of it. The moment with Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose at the ramp further hit home how real and raw this all was.

Oh, and it turned out Vince McMahon was right all along.

We did love him after all.
