Cheap Pop & Cheap Heat of the Week in Wrestling #200

Posted by Ross K. Foad Friday, March 9, 2018
Welcome to another edition of Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat from Smark Out Moment! Each week, we break down the world of professional wrestling and examine two of the polar opposite ends of the spectrum: one thing that was by far the worst thing (Cheap Heat) and the best thing (Cheap Pop) to happen over the past 7 days in sports entertainment. So, what went down this week that we loved and hated about the business?

CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
GOT THE KNACK OF THIS

The build up to Fastlane has been pretty poor, but an undeniably strong highlight of the go-home show was Shinsuke Nakamura's interaction with Rusev that led to their forthcoming bout.

Firstly, Nakamura's short, but sweet interview was clear and concise, and sounded far closer to reality than some of the over scripted cringe that he has been made to say in the past, but the best bit really started once Aiden and Rusev arrived on the scene.

Wanting revenge for Nakamura having destroyed his friends beautiful singing voice, Rusev proceeded to challenge Nakamura to the aforementioned match at Fastlane. However, not only was the match accepted, but it was met by Nakamura giving a pitch perfect Aiden impression in which he declared after beating him that it would be "Nakamura day."

Who would have thought that Nakamura had a perfect English opera voice? The shocked look on Rusev's face suggested that he did not! Him then muttering that you "can't just make up your own holiday" was the perfect ending to a skit that proved just how over all three are with crowd.

Ok, it is a bit of a telegraphed match, as there is no way that Mr. Royal Rumble is going to have his WrestleMania momentum squashed in favor of Rusev, but it does not take away from how fun this little segment was.

CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
ANOTHER BELT ON THE WAY?

There has been a rumor doing the rounds this past week that WWE might introduce a Cruiserweight tag team title after WrestleMania.

On the one hand, I applaud WWE for making steps to improve the Cruiserweight division with the recent introduction of an on-screen commissioner, a well-received tournament, and easing up on keeping the cruiserweights grounded, but is this the next logical step?

There are only around a dozen superstars on the brand as it is. Sure, it is great to give those not in the main title picture something to do, but another set of belts? With each additional belt available, the titles mean less and less. This has always been a major gripe of mine with the brand splits as it is. As long as the Universal title is in existence, the WWE championship will never mean as much as it once did. The same can be said for the tag team and women's titles.

Also, if we absolutely must have a new tag-team division, surely the women's division would be a more worthwhile direction to consider first? I would add the caveat that it would work far better if the rosters were merged again, but a womens tag champion is something people have absolutely been wanting to happen for a while now. The same cannot be said for cruiserweight tag belts.

Though, if it does go ahead, can we at least have something different from a lazy Raw/SmackDown Live clone design with a purple strap…
