CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
THE ANGLE DADDY ANGLE
So, Jason Jordan has been revealed as Kurt Angle's long lost son. I did not know what to make of this at first, but upon reflection, this is one of those stories that could be the best or worst story of 2017. As such, this week's column will be examining both the good and the bad of the situation.
On the plus side? Well, it was unpredictable. We knew that it had to involve something sordid such as an affair, but the son angle was not something that most saw coming. The old "WWE is too predictable" line cannot be applied here.
Where we go from here is anybody's guess, but a reveal like this has to have a massive payoff, surely? Kurt has been a face General Manager since his return, but will this sway him to be horrendously biased towards Jason, booking him in title matches and even cheating to win? He has already pulled some strings to get him transferred to Raw, so it is going to be fun to watch what happens here.
In addition, one could imagine that this pairing may lead to plenty of goofy Kurt and Jason bonding skits, and I do not think that anyone could object to seeing Kurt behave like that.
Lastly, being revealed as a family member to Kurt Angle indicates that WWE must see something big in Jason Jordan. I never saw him as someone with an interesting personality while part of American Alpha, but this will undoubtedly offer him every opportunity to prove otherwise. For better or for worse, there are few things that are going to be as big as being revealed as Kurt Angle's son.
Yes, there is every chance that this could be a car wreck, but it is a throwback to the soap opera styled Attitude Era, and I am looking forward to finding out either way.
CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
THE ANGLE DADDY ANGLE
THE ANGLE DADDY ANGLE
With the good comes the bad, and the Angle/Jordan story is no exemption. Firstly, there are some glaring plot holes here. Why would this reveal have ruined Kurt Angle? He was terrified of it coming out and having his career ruined, but why would it have? So, years ago he had a relationship with an African American woman, and unbeknownst to him, they had a son together. This would have been scandalous in Victorian England, but it is not the sort of thing that has one barred from polite society nowadays. Remember, this was not even an affair!
Also, what is Corey Graves part in all this? Are we going to know? Ditto to the blackmailer. Who was sending the texts? Hopefully, we shall find out as the story progresses, but I have a feeling this might just never be touched upon again.
Some fans feel that this was not quite worth the build-up and speculation that it was given, and there are some rumblings that this was not the original big reveal. Did Vince McMahon insist on this as a last-minute change? I still see no clear path to how Kurt Angle would return to the ring from here. Admittedly, I was somewhat underwhelmed by the reveal in comparison to the intrigue that I had felt, but then we must also remember that sometimes Vince McMahon knows exactly what he is doing.
Sometimes.
