Cheap Pop & Cheap Heat of the Week in Wrestling: 7/16/2017

Posted by Ross K. Foad Sunday, July 16, 2017
Welcome to another edition of Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat from Smark Out Moment! Each week, we break down the world of professional wrestling and examine two of the polar opposite ends of the spectrum: one thing that was by far the worst thing (Cheap Heat) and the best thing (Cheap Pop) to happen over the past 7 days in sports entertainment. So, what went down this week that we loved and hated about the business?

CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
AWARD WINNING SUPPORT CREW

Despite the somewhat brutal name and auspicious start, I am really enjoying the antics of The Miz and The Miztourage. It puts a fresh spin on The Miz to have goons who can physically interfere on top of having Maryse do the distraction. Plus, having him leading a faction was something that he had yet to achieve in his ten plus year tenure. While we did have a loose informal version of this when he and Maryse were aligned to The Spirit Squad, the shelf life of that was directly linked to his feud with Dolph Ziggler and little more.

Some people complain that Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas deserves better, but with the exception of Bo being a Wyatt, I disagree that there is realistically a better role for them at this time. I am not even sure what Bo is even trying to achieve by being a cosplayer American Badass Undertaker, but I like it, and it suits his considerably more aggressive personality. Ditto to smart suit Curtis Axel who really does not get enough credit for his talent. It is a little known fact that it is Curtis who The Rock specially requests to help him shake ring rust when doing any WWE return.

But if you really do not believe me that this is good for them, consider the fact that being around the Intercontinental champion meant that Bo and Curtis were in the closing segment of Monday Night Raw, and when was the last time that you could say that?

CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
THE PREDICAMENT OF PAIGE

It has not been a good week for the wrestler formerly known as Alberto Del Rio. Alberto El Patron, as he is now known, found himself suspended from Global Force Wrestling following allegations of domestic violence against fellow wrestler and fiancé, Paige.

Let us not beat around the bush—this relationship has had fans scratching their heads from day one. Nobody thought that his was a good idea, and nobody thought that this would last very long.

While we may have been wrong on the latter point, the former cannot be denied. These two are not good for each other's personal or professional life. This might sound very callous and condensing, but there was always something mismatching about their being together, and the evidence continues to stack up as to why.

From drunk ramblings in public, to shooting on WWE, showing up in the crowd of TNA (a big no-no in WWE), and fighting in airports, this is not exactly the makings of a happily ever after. Add that to reports of Paige often appearing bruised these days, and you can begin to understand the concern over their being together.

While I have never cared for Alberto as a wrestler, and find his real life arrogance very jarring, I do like Paige very much indeed. There was a time in pre-women's revolution where she and AJ Lee more or less carried the Diva's division, and this should not be forgotten.

Paige has already had an impressive career, and deserves to continue to do so, but can this continue to happen with WWE hating Alberto at her side? Interestingly, WWE were criticized when they had tried to keep Paige and Alberto apart when he was under contract, but was this really out of just spite, or did someone see the writing on the wall long before the couple ever did?
