Smark Out Moment

UFC 209 took place on March 4, 2017 at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada. This is an ongoing review of my thoughts, what happened and the results of the bouts that took place at the pay-per-view:




WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP: Tyron Woodley (c) vs Stephen Thompson (#1)

Two things before the main event: First, stop mentioning the new rules if they're not in effect tonight. Second, why are they not in effect? Why wait until "July or August"? Thompson takes a very cautious first round. There's clearly a lot of respect here after that amazing first fight. Hard to call the second round; still very cautious from both guys. Woodley takes the third; he had Thompson on the ground for half the round. I don't know about the fourth. It's good, but not as good as the first. Woodley went for it in the last 30 seconds and that probably won him the fight! These guys have had two great fights and I don't think anyone would complain if we got a third.

RESULT: Tyron Woodley, majority decision. Probably the right result, but I like the judge who scored it a draw.

LIGHTWEIGHT: Lando Vannata vs David Teymur

No Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Tony Ferguson is a disappointment! This is not a good co-main event. I've resorted to eating month old Creme Eggs. Still good though. Anyway, Vannata looks good, threw in some fancy kicks. Amazing fight with two very different styles. They're both going for it; has to be Vannata's though. There's a superman punch in the second round for any Roman Reigns fans... no? WHAT? 30-27 to Teymur? I'd have taken 29-28 to Vannata, but what are the judges watching?

RESULT: David Teymur, unanimous decision.

MIDDLEWEIGHT: Rashad Evans vs Daniel Kelly

Great finish! Really not sure which way this fight went. I'd probably give it to Kelly, but not surprised either way. I agree with the judges, very hard to call. Worth a rematch.

RESULT: Daniel Kelly, split decision.

STRAWWEIGHT: Amanda Cooper vs Cynthia Calvillo

Cooper almost survived that choke, great win for Calvillo though! Worth watching if you have a few minutes.

RESULT: Cynthia Calvillo, 1st round submission.

HEAVYWEIGHT: Alistair Overeem (#3) vs Mark Hunt (#8)

HUNT'S LEG! Never seen anyone's leg look that bad! Great win for Overeem. He could be back in the title picture soon.

RESULT: Alistair Overeem, 3rd round KO.


HEAVYWEIGHT: Marcin Tybura vs Luis Henrique

Tybura was dominant for most of the fight, Henrique did well, but no contest really.

RESULT: Marcin Tybura, 3rd round TKO.

FEATHERWEIGHT: Mirsad Bektic (#13) vs Darren Elkins (#14)

I love Bektic. He was so dominant in the first two rounds. Just goes to show, a good hit can win any fight. I hope Mirsad is okay, sure made Me(ir) sad... no? Okay.

RESULT: Darren Elkins, 3rd round KO.

BANTAMWEIGHT: Iuri Alcantara (#15) vs Luke Sanders

Is it Iura nor Luri? Huh, guess I've been getting that wrong this whole time. Solid win for Alcantara though.

RESULT: Iuri Alcantara, 2nd round submission.

HEAVYWEIGHT: Mark Godbeer vs Daniel Spitz

Easy win for Godbeer, no surprise he won all three rounds. Spitz didn't really turn up.

RESULT: Mark Godbeer, unanimous decision.


LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT: Tyson Pedro vs Paul Craig

Well... an early finish tells the story, not a bad fight considering, though.

RESULT: Tyson Pedro, 1st round TKO.

BANTAMWEIGHT: Albert Morales vs Andre Soukhamthath

Didn't see too much of this fight, but it looked close and from what I saw, judges got it right.

RESULT: Albert Morales, split decision.
