The current WWE Twitter Banner for Hell in a Cell |
Despite the youth of Sasha Banks and Charlotte, this is already a rivalry with a long history. They first crossed paths back in NXT when they teamed up as the BFFs to reek havoc on the women's division. They were a dominant tag team, but it was when they split and pursued singles careers that they each made a massive mark on the world of women's wrestling.
Sasha had one of the most compelling feuds with Bayley, leading to them stealing the show at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn. That match won NXT Match of the Year 2015 and was considered one of the best matches of the year throughout all of wrestling. She got her rematch in a historic Iron Woman match as the main event of NXT TakeOver: Respect. Sasha, Charlotte, and their fellow Four Horsewoman Becky Lynch had one of the largest and most hyped women's matches at WrestleMania, When her moment finally came, it was on the first Monday Night Raw of a new era in a jaw dropping victory.
Meanwhile, Charlotte was instrumental in the pivot of women's wrestling when she and Natalya fought for the NXT Women's Championship in a co-main event. Only a few months into her main roster career, she dethroned the longest reigning Diva's Champion Nikki Bella and defended it all the way to WrestleMania, defeating Sasha and Becky for the new Women's Championship. If it weren't for the change in title, Charlotte would actually be the longest reigning with 309 days.
Together, they became only the second female duo to main event an episode of Monday Night Raw—the last time being Trish Stratus and Lita in 2004. Now, they're set to make history together at Hell in a Cell, and prove that they can hit just as hard as the boys.
It's official: the defense will take place in a Hell in a Cell match |
Although some are speculating it could happen, the likelihood of a main event is pretty slim. That's alright—the women's division has plenty of milestones yet to accomplish, and WWE would be smart to spread them around the talent. For this show, we can expect to see this match either as the opener, or around the 10pm mark to reinvigorate the crowd.
Given how they built the Raw main event, this match definitely has a chance at being one of the most hyped on the card. WWE's patting themselves on the back for even agreeing to do it in the first place, so they won't let anyone forget how historic this is. The video packages will dive into the history of their rivalry again, and likely call up the "born into this" vs. "born to do this," dynamic.
Last time they faced off, it actually wasn't a particularly long segment. This time, they need the time to let the match breathe. It can have the best build in the world, but if it goes out in just a few minutes, it'll feel unceremonious. Given 15-20 minutes, these two will surely steal the show.
One thing we can count on: Charlotte and Sasha will have something to prove in that cell, and they'll wrestle like it. We need only to look at Sasha's Iron Woman match with Bayley to see this. The point of that match was to show that they had the endurance and toughness to get through the 30 minutes. What did they do? They put on a match with practically no rest holds, just brutal spot after brutal spot. She'll want to do the same this time around, and given the point of the cell is to add a level of danger, she and Charlotte will not shy away from it.
WWE will probably be hesitant to let them do anything too dangerous. It wasn't that long ago that they were told to "wrestle like Divas," so wrestling like Mankind might be a stretch. Don't hold your breath for anyone to go to the top of the cage, through the cage or moonsault off of it onto her opponent. What we can expect to see are spots like a Suicide Dive that crashes into it, likewise the top rope (and possibly corkscrew) moonsault. They'll throw each other at the structure, ram their opponent's face into it, and use it to get just a little extra height. There might—might—be some blood, given how easy it is in that structure get cut open. However, WWE has a blanket no-blood policy, so it won't be intentional. It's unlikely these two will purposely push the envelope in terms of what management says is okay, because it could mean not getting this opportunity again.
Finally, my prediction for this historic match up has to be Sasha Banks retaining the title. It just doesn't make sense for her to lose it so quickly after defeating Charlotte. Her last reign was cut short by bad timing of that nagging back injury, leaving fans disappointed. Not to mention, it'll take place in The Boss's home town of Boston. Be on the lookout for a little moment of respect between them after the match. It's unlikely they'll do a real curtain call, but these two have been working for this for a long time, so they'll share something.
Both were faces for this moment, Charlotte's heat is too hot to get away with it now. |
So are you excited for this match up at Hell in a Cell, and who do you think will walk out of the cell victorious?
