Cheap Pop & Cheap Heat of the Week in Wrestling: 8/21/2016

Posted by Ross K. Foad Sunday, August 21, 2016
Welcome to another edition of Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat from Smark Out Moment! Each week, we break down the world of professional wrestling and examine two of the polar opposite ends of the spectrum: one thing that was by far the worst thing (Cheap Heat) and the best thing (Cheap Pop) to happen over the past 7 days in sports entertainment. So, what went down this week that we loved and hated about the business?

CHEAP POP OF THE WEEK:
BLUE BUILDS IT BETTER

What main title event are you most looking to at SummerSlam? Finn Balor vs. Seth Rollins will undoubtedly be an epic spectacle, but the build and story behind it has not done as much for me as the blue brand’s effort.

This is partly because the WWE World Championship has decades more prestige than the WWE Universal Championship (I still cannot take the name seriously) but it is more to do with Dean Ambrose and Dolph Ziggler’s feud feeling far more realistic.

Seth and Finn’s feud is based solely on the desire to be the inaugural champion of their brand, but Dean and Dolph’s has a more personal feel to it.

We know how bad Dolph Ziggler has scratched and clawed to prove his worth, and the way that he and Dean get right up in each other’s faces helps bring the back story to life. Dean spent two years watching his former Shield brethren ascend to the main title picture, and he sure as hell has no intention of being siphoned back down the card now. The personal stakes are high for both men.

What is also intriguing is how both these men are baby faces, which is bizarrely rare in any championship picture these days, making it all the more exciting when their clash finally does come to pass.

CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
GIVING THE GAME AWAY

WWE was like an excited child this past week. Despite it being just one week till SummerSlam, they could not but help to give us some advanced screenings.

I applaud the decision to throw it all out there to try to make Raw as exciting as possible, but this has unfortunately come at the cost of taking the shine away from some anticipated SummerSlam moments.

Were you looking forward to a spectacular SummerSlam debut entrance from Finn Balor’s Demon King persona? ‘Pah’ said WWE creative, and then proceeded to show him off midway through Monday Night Raw instead.

The result? It will not be as mesmerising come SummerSlam. This easily could have waited.

Monday Night Raw also gave us Roman Reigns vs. Rusev in a non-title match. While I am sure that these two will deliver come SummerSlam, there were other ways to build this without having a practise run of the actual match.

This being said, I still think that SummerSlam is heating up to be a good one — even if it does come with a little bit of Dejavu.

Extra Heat: Suspensions Smackdown

Paige, Alberto Del Rio, and Eva Marie have all been suspended for 30 days following a violation of the Wellness Policy.

3 Superstars in under 3 days. Wow. Did they all go to the same party or what?

WWE are clearly cracking down with testing after the high-profile cases of Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar so these results are quite the cause of embarrassment for the company.

Ironically, while this will do nothing to enhance the dwindling WWE careers of Alberto Del Rio and Paige, it may just play in favor of Eva Marie’s match avoidance gimmick, for she has now got four weeks’ worth of excuses ready made!

So there you have it, my two choices for the week. What do YOU think are the Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat this week in professional wrestling? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
