NEW DAY'S OPEN CHALLENGE
As regular readers will know, I try to maintain a positive outlook where possible. However, never before have I been so low on source material for the POP half of my column.
In a week of predictability, injuries, and Health Slater getting screen time*, all I can say is thank God for The New Day.
Their small segment and "Open Challenge" on Raw made me laugh more than anything else on the show. The antics, dressing up, and cowardice reminded me of Edge and Christian, which obviously reeks of awesomeness.
The New Day are the go-to-guys for providing guaranteed entertainment every single time. Whether they issue a real open challenge in the near future, or continue to tease false promises, it really does not matter. The New Day will keep me, and countless others, tuning in every single week.
*I actually really like Slater, but it was obvious that this section was filler for the sake of filler.
CHEAP HEAT OF THE WEEK:
SHEAMUSLY PREDICTABLE
Sheamus winning the Heavyweight Championship was not the worst thing to have happened this week, but neither was it groundbreaking stuff.
The problem here is essentially the predictability of it all. WWE had a real chance to do something to shakes things up in the roster.
We could have had a Neville, Stardust, or Kevin Owens as our champion. Instead, they went down the most predictable route possible, having Roman Reigns win only to lose two minutes later to a cash-in by Sheamus.
So many of us saw this coming, but we wanted to believe that WWE would do something radically different. And this, children, is why we should never dream.
Sadly, it gets worse. Six months in advance, we practically know the outcome to WrestleMania 32—a repeat of the Daniel Bryan story. The screwed over champion who held the title for minutes will get his redemption at WrestleMania against all odds.
Again, it will not be the worst story, but neither will it be the freshest one.
Ho-hum.
So there you have it, my two choices for the week. What do YOU think are the Cheap Pop and Cheap Heat this week in professional wrestling? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
