Is The Undertaker Better as a Heel or a Babyface?

Posted by Anthony Mango Wednesday, August 26, 2015
HEEL OR FACE is a specialty segment wherein we break down a particular wrestler and discuss their strengths and weaknesses on the Good vs Evil scale. There are three questions that are brought up in this: 1) are they better as a heel or a face, 2) should they turn from what they currently are, and 3) how would you turn them?

The fifth entry in this series is going to focus on a legend who came into the business as a heel, but eventually became one of the biggest babyfaces of all time despite having a character of being a demonic, dead occultist, funny enough. Recently, he's been under the magnifying glass as it seems as though he's taking a turn back to the dark side. Who are we talking about?

THE UNDERTAKER

A) BETTER AS A HEEL OR A FACE?

Face. The Undertaker is a fantastic heel and his character fits it 100%, but he's just too goddamn cool to be a heel for long. WWE has handled Undertaker perfectly, for the most part, by bringing him in as a heel and having him start off at the top with Hulk Hogan. He eventually became so beloved that he was a face and they were only able to use him as a heel when Stone Cold Steve Austin was so red hot that he had a hero popular enough to counteract him. He then found his way back to being a face again, where he's remained for years.

What makes The Undertaker so good as a babyface is that you get a character who is darker than what normal faces are. If John Cena is Superman, then Taker is Batman. Heels are always pulling off evil things, which makes babyface Undertaker so interesting because he's doing that as a good guy that you can cheer for. Plus, he's become such a legend that it's tough for fans to go against him anyway.

B) SHOULD HE TURN?

Yes. What???? You heard me. Undertaker turning heel is something that would be different and interesting for the next year or so. This would give him a change in character from what we've seen the past couple years, which could be enough to boost his adrenaline. He needs to end his career as a face, but he could have a feud with someone like Sting and maybe one or two other people as a heel.

C) HOW WOULD I TURN HIM?

I wouldn't have done what has happened with Brock Lesnar, but I would have made him start going on a ridiculously violent spree with anyone in WWE, including top babyfaces. Basically, The Undertaker is just snapping like a rubber band back to his more sadistic ways, taking out any and every frustration he has on any possible victims in the company, whether it be someone from NXT (how cool would that be, to see him show up and decimate someone on that show?) or a main roster heel or face. I don't know about specifics, but it definitely wouldn't be "wimp Undertaker has to low blow Lesnar and taps out" style.
