Belt or Bury: Should Damien Sandow Become Champion?

Posted by Anthony Mango Wednesday, November 6, 2013
Welcome to the second installment of BELT OR BURY, a specialty segment wherein you must choose between two different options for a particular wrestler in question: a) should they be given a push to a higher spot on the card and possibly a championship or b) should this wrestler become a jobber or possibly even get released?

Damien Sandow wins WWE Championship Damien Sandow World Heavyweight Championship

When picking between the "push or pink slip" type options, keep in mind everything from the wrestler's past as well as their potential future. Is this someone that has nothing to offer the world of wrestling and should step out of the limelight or are they being underutilized and should be rewarded for their efforts?

DAMIEN SANDOW

HISTORY: As of this article, the Damien Sandow character has been on the main roster since 2012, though he had been in WWE for some time beforehand. He floated around with no true feuds until he started teaming up with Cody Rhodes as the tag team "Rhodes Scholars". Despite being big fish in a rather small pond, this team never won the titles. Rhodes Scholars would split when Damien Sandow won the Money in the Bank in 2013 and began declaring himself the uncrowned future World Heavyweight champion. Just recently on Monday Night Raw, Damien Sandow cashed-in his contract title shot on John Cena, but was unsuccessful and did not in fact win the title.

CURRENT STATUS: Some think Sandow is on the path to win the title from John Cena, despite having lost his cash-in attempt. Others think that it still won't come to fruition and Cena's here to stay as the champion, at least until WrestleMania. I'm of the latter opinion and I don't think we'll be seeing Sandow versus Cena at WrestleMania XXX. Because of that, I don't think we'll see Damien Sandow win the World Heavyweight Championship any time soon. He may win it down the line, but I think the earliest we could see him with a world title around his waist is around SummerSlam of 2014.

PROPOSAL: I think the way to go with Damien Sandow is to give him the Intercontinental Championship. With his current feud against Alberto Del Rio and John Cena, you can put the three of them in triple threat matches wherein John Cena retains by pinning Del Rio or making him submit, rather than Sandow. In the meantime, have a babyface beat Curtis Axel for the Intercontinental title. While Sandow is frustrated that he's still the uncrowned champion, he can bump into this babyface backstage. The babyface gloats about how they're a champion now and Sandow isn't, which will lead to an impromptu title match between the two that Sandow wins. Your new Intercontinental champion can hold it at least into WrestleMania, if not longer, and bring some purpose back to that title while gearing up for a main event slot around this time next year.

BELT OR BURY = BELT. What a waste it would be if Damien Sandow were to be buried in any fashion. Even if you're not the biggest fan of the guy, you have to admit that it would be a mistake to have someone go from Money in the Bank holder to a jobber. Give him a belt, for sure, just don't take it overboard.
