NXT Season 5 First Impressions

Posted by Anthony Mango Tuesday, March 8, 2011

They advertised this new season as "nothing we've ever seen before"...and it's comprised of all people we have seen before. Worse, they chose the rejects. If you're going to do a redemption season, why not bring Derrick Bateman, Percy Watson, aka the good guys back? With the exception of one (Byron Saxton), the other 5 are 5 of my least favorites. Really, the only way they could have picked a worse lineup is if they replaced Saxton with Eli Cottonwood.

On top of that, they've replaced Josh on commentary with Regal. While I'm pro-Regal on commentary, why couldn't they have replaced Todd and kept Josh? Josh is good. Todd can be quoted of saying tonight that Hornswoggle "is just a bearded child".

The pros this time around have nothing to offer either, and the theme seems to be that this season, nobody can talk proper English. No Swagger? Big Show? Mysterio? McIntyre? Bourne? Sheamus? Think about how much actual comedy they're missing out on by choosing Kozlov and Hornswoggle instead of Santino!

BYRON SAXTON (pro: Yoshi Tatsu)
The only one I think has any potential out of this whole group, and he's paired with a guy that should have been fired months ago in my opinion. Sorry, Yoshi, you've outlived your stay and it's time to go the way of Tajiri and the other Asian stars that can't develop characters past "stereotypical Asian who talk in broken Engrish and make kick-time for bad guys".

CONOR O'BRIAN (pro: Vladimir Kozlov)
I was hoping I would never have to see him again. This rat gimmick is almost as bad as Hornswoggle. Thank God they look like they're not continuing that. I still don't think he's good enough on the mic or in the ring, despite the absence of the rat gimmick.

DARREN YOUNG (pro: Chavo Guerrero)
This is what, the fifth attempt at resurrecting his career? Darren Young failed to capture the audience as the party boy, failed as an SES member, was the first to be thrown off Nexus, failed as a babyface, and has been on Superstars ever since. Why bother? Why not cut your ties instead of investing even more time in him? Plus, if they were really hell-bent on giving him one last shot, why not tag him up with his old partner, Percy Watson, and have them do their gimmick as a tag team? Wait, I forgot, that's a forbidden subject, tag teams. What I mean to say, in WWE robot mode, is "two individuals that are thrown in the same segment for a few weeks until we split them up and then forget about them". There we go. I've been waiting for them to use Chavo as a pro since the first season and it's a shame they're throwing him in such a terrible cast. It's pretty bad when they're making Darren Young look like the star of this season.

JACOB NOVAK (pro: JTG)
He got knocked out first for a reason. Why bring him back?

LUCKY CANNON (pro: Tyson Kidd)
The guy with zero personality is matched up with a guy who can't offer any advice? I like Kidd in the ring but he (and Smith) aren't interesting on their own, and Cannon last time didn't impress me at all. Now, it seems like all he's done different is put on a robe and decide to be a heel. Snooze.

TITUS O'NEIL (pro: Hornswoggle)
The worst combination ever. My least favorite NXT participant from all seasons combined, mixed with my least favorite entity in the WWE. Orton, I'm begging you, punt me in the skull so I can be comatose for the next few months and not have to watch this!

No Steamboat. No Rollins. No DiBiase. No Woods. Excuse me while I go cry in the corner knowing that my future self is going to have to watch every one of these episodes. You're lucky I love you, readers. I'm taking  a bullet for you here haha.
