WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament Results |
DAY ONE RESULTS:
It's time for the first day of the tournament! Triple H starts things off with a promo asking if everybody is ready. The belt is in the ring, Michael Cole and Nigel McGuinness are ready to go on commentary, and the crowd seems pumped.
Trent Seven vs. H.C. Dyer
RESULTS: Trent Seven advances after hitting the Seven Stars
THOUGHTS: Not bad. Admittedly, I'm very tired watching this, so my energy level is low, which might diminish things a bit for me. Keep that in mind.
Jordan Devlin vs. Danny Burch
RESULTS: Jordan Devlin wins even though Burch kicks out just at the same time, and has a big gash on the back of his head.
THOUGHTS: That was awkward.
After the match, Danny Burch offers a handshake and Devlin superkicks him instead, cementing himself as a heel in this division.
Saxon Huxley vs. Sam Gradwell
The fans chant "let's go Jesus" and "Jesus sucks" in reference to how Saxon Huxley looks (hahaha). They change the lyrics of "Hey Baby" to "Heeeey Jesus, oooh, aah, I wanna knoooow if you'll be my God." Amazing.
RESULTS: Sam Gradwell via pinfall.
THOUGHTS: The crowd was more entertaining than the match itself, I'll admit.
Pete Dunne vs. Roy Johnson
RESULTS: Pete Dunne via pinfall.
THOUGHTS: I'm still trying to figure out what being wavy means.
Wolfgang vs. Tyson T-Bone
RESULTS: Wolfgang advances.
THOUGHTS: Curious why they're having similar people matched up in the next round. Wolfgang has the babyface thing going on and so does Trent Seven. Pete Dunne and Sam Gradwell are both brawler heels. Strange not to choose to pair up heels and babyfaces.
James Drake vs. Joseph Conners
RESULTS: Joseph Conners via pinfall.
THOUGHTS: These two look damn near identical so I felt like one guy was wrestling a mirror.
Mark Andrews vs. Dan Moloney
RESULTS: My money is on Mark Andrews winning this one...and that prediction was correct.
THOUGHTS: I like Andrews. Now, I want him to win the tournament.
Tyler Bate vs. Tucker
RESULTS: Tyler Bate via the Tyler Driver 97
THOUGHTS: Good match. This could have been a quarterfinals even.
DAY ONE RECAP:
The action hasn't been anywhere near as entertaining as the Cruiserweight Classic, but it's not been bad by any means. Nigel McGuinness is rather flat on commentary, but it's his first day, so let's cut him some slack as it will take some time to get into the swing of things. I wish there were more characters involved instead of everybody just being "some guy" essentially. There's definitely a translation issue when it comes to me not being able to connect as well, since I'm an American and I don't know a single one of these guys they've shown in any capacity except Danny Burch and the quick shot of Dave Taylor in the crowd. Some guys look like they could be fun to watch in the future while others are just instantly forgettable. Easily, my favorite part of this first day was the crowd's treatment of Saxon Huxley.
MATCHES SET FOR DAY TWO:
Tyler Bate vs. Jordan Devlin (prediction: Devlin wins)
Trent Seven vs. Wolfgang (prediction: Seven wins)
Mark Andrews vs. Joseph Conners (prediction: Andrews wins)
Pete Dunne vs. Sam Gradwell (prediction: Dunne wins)
DAY TWO RESULTS:
QUARTERFINALS MATCH: Pete Dunne vs. Sam Gradwell
RESULTS: Pete Dunne moves to the semifinals.
THOUGHTS: Dunne definitely has more momentum than Gradwell after they had him get the jump on Gradwell at the end of day one. I do think he's losing the next round, though.
QUARTERFINALS MATCH: Mark Andrews vs. Joseph Conners
RESULTS: Mark Andrews moves to the semifinals.
THOUGHTS: As expected and hoped for. Now, this all depends on whether a heel is on the opposite end of the bracket or a babyface, as that will determine if Dunne or Andrews goes to the finals. I'm still going with Andrews as the winner right now, though.
QUARTERFINALS MATCH: Trent Seven vs. Wolfgang
RESULTS: Wolfgang with the win.
THOUGHTS: Well that was surprising. I thought Seven had that win going for him. I still think the winner of the next round will be Jordan Devlin, though, so I guess it doesn't matter if it gets to the same finals match.
QUARTERFINALS MATCH: Tyler Bate vs. Jordan Devlin
RESULTS: Tyler Bate advances.
THOUGHTS: Okay, I got this one wrong, too. I guess that means Pete Dunne goes to the finals instead of Mark Andrews, right?
SEMIFINALS MATCH: Pete Dunne vs. Mark Andrews
RESULTS: Pete Dunne gets the win.
THOUGHTS: Best match so far, in my opinion.
SEMIFINALS MATCH: Wolfgang vs. Tyler Bate
RESULTS: Tyler Bate goes to the finals.
THOUGHTS: Not bad, but hard to follow up the previous match.
Pete Dunne attacks Tyler Bate while he's celebrating, getting the jump on his finals opponent. William Regal sends him to the back.
NON-TOURNAMENT MATCH: Neville vs. Tommy End
Hey, this is a nice little surprise.
RESULTS: Neville is victorious with the Red Arrow.
THOUGHTS: Good idea to have an exhibition match to break things up before the finals, good idea to showcase Neville considering his background, and a good idea to give Tommy End a match to introduce him to the WWE Universe before he starts showing up in NXT.
Finn Balor comes out for an appearance and a promo about how passionate the fans are.
TOURNAMENT FINALS — WWE UNITED KINGDOM CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: Pete Dunne vs. Tyler Bate
RESULTS: Tyler Bate wins the title!
THOUGHTS: Very good match indeed!
