WWE SmackDown Backlash 2017 Spoilers |
WWE Championship Match: Randy Orton (c) vs. Jinder Mahal
Woooow. I did not expect Jinder Mahal to win that No. 1 Contender's match, did you? Despite that, I'm actually cool with this. Why not do something different and give a guy a push that hasn't had one before? Mahal has one of the best looks of the whole roster at the moment and the worst case scenario here is that they have a shitty feud for a few weeks. Then, he can go back to being a midcarder. Best case scenario, Mahal is taken seriously from now on. No matter what, we know Orton isn't dropping the title to him......right?
PREDICTION: Randy Orton retains.
SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match: The Usos (c) vs. Breezango
I think Tyler Breeze and Fandango are very underrated and underutilized, so for them to get a title shot on a pay-per-view that doesn't involve other tag teams or anything that pulls the rug out from underneath them is a good thing. That being said, I don't have any faith that they'll dethrone The Usos. That's for The New Day to do.
PREDICTION: The Usos might not be champions for too much longer, but they're not losing the belts at Backlash.
United States Championship Match: Kevin Owens (c) vs. AJ Styles
My gut tells me Kevin Owens will retain, as they have this "new face of America" moniker that should last a little longer. However, I don't have a solid prediction of who I think will dethrone him when the time comes. Sami Zayn seems like a decent fallback and Shinsuke Nakamura is a very good option so they can give him a title without putting the WWE Championship on him, but I also sort of feel like Baron Corbin may get a run with the belt. If that happens, Styles should beat Owens and then lose it to Corbin. Ah, screw it, let's go with Owens retaining and when he's done with his feud against Styles, Nakamura wins the belt from KO.
PREDICTION: Kevin Owens retains.
Six-Woman Tag Team Match: Naomi, Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch vs. The Welcoming Committee
Well I guess that Charlotte face turn is becoming more and more solidified, isn't it? This seems more like a SmackDown television show main event rather than something that should happen at Backlash, but it all depends on WWE's plan for the future. With the Superstar Shake-Up, I never anticipated we'd get Charlotte turning face and Natalya forming a stable with Tamina and Carmella, so my whole idea of Charlotte winning the title from Naomi right off the bat appears to be null and void. It could still happen, but at the very least, I'm interested in how there's a possibility we get something different for the next few months.
PREDICTION: Charlotte will probably get the win for her team.
Dolph Ziggler vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
This could be really, really good. I don't want to get my hopes up that it will be a Match of the Year contender, but it definitely has the potential.
PREDICTION: Shinsuke Nakamura wins.
Pre-Show Kickoff Match: Tye Dillinger vs. Aiden English
The Perfect 10 damn sure better not lose to someone who currently has a gimmick of "crybaby loser" am I right?
PREDICTION: Tye Dillinger wins.
Baron Corbin vs. Sami Zayn
I'm glad to see both of these guys found their way on the card. They're going to be big players for the future of the SmackDown brand and it made perfect sense for the two to face off, considering their interactions as of late. It should be no surprise if this match is booked in a way where Corbin dominates, Zayn puts up a good fight, but ultimately comes up short to the big guy, but while that's predictable, it doesn't mean it's the wrong decision of how this should go down.
PREDICTION: Baron Corbin wins.
Luke Harper vs. Erick Rowan
Speaking of being happy to see two guys on the card, the same is applicable to Erick Rowan and Luke Harper, for sure. I was really hoping to see a little more attention put on the former Wyatt Family members and even though I think it will probably not be given too much time on the show, it's great that they're at least getting the opportunity to go out there and have the audience check them out. This should go a long way into allowing them to be contenders for the Money in the Bank ladder match at the next event.
PREDICTION: I'm 50/50. Either man can win and I wouldn't be shocked.
